The Great Notes on Pramana Heard by Gyaltsab Dharma Raja in the Presence of Je. The Great Notes on Pramana Heard by Gyaltsab Dharma Raja in the Presence of Je. The Great Notes on Pramana Heard by Gyaltsab Dharma Raja in the Presence of Je are complete. Homage to the venerable and holy lamas. In order to enable those who seek liberation to clearly distinguish between the correct path and the non-path, and to enter into liberation, there are four aspects to determining the treatises on reasoning composed by the great, unrivaled masters Dignāga and Dharmakīrti: the need for composing the treatises on pramana, the way in which that need depends on those treatises, cherishing the treatises that possess that need, and determining the body of the subject matter of those treatises. The first has two aspects: refuting wrong conceptions about the need, and the actual correct need. The first has three aspects: refuting wrong conceptions in relation to seeking liberation, refuting in relation to the difference of objects, and refuting the view that although there is a need, it is inferior. The first is: these treatises on pramana are not necessary for seeking liberation, because they are speculative treatises, and because they are logic that has become external to the inner teachings, and so on. It is necessary to explain this: the so-called speculative dharma refers to the teachings of the outsiders, which are established by their root teachers, such as the sage Island-born, etc., who have not directly realized all meanings, but have merely posited them through speculation, and the treatises that follow them are also called speculative treatises. Moreover, as it is said: Speculation is dependent and uncertain, non-pervasive, worldly, and causes weariness, it is said to rely on children. As it is said, for the suchness of things, it is necessary to determine through speculation by grasping only the general characteristics, and for what has not been directly realized, it is regarded as speculation, these are two situations. The first situation, that it is not necessary for seeking liberation, is true. However, these treatises on reasoning are not like that, they themselves do not admit it, and it is not reasonable, because they are followers of the root teacher who directly sees all knowable things. If according to the second situation, then all dharmas below the path of application, the supreme dharma, will become unnecessary for seeking liberation, because the nature of dharma.

Because it must be taken as the object of cognition. It is also unreasonable to consider it separate from the treatises of inner learning, because these treatises of reason unerringly establish the emptiness of selflessness of persons and phenomena through reason, and mainly teach the practice of higher wisdom. This treatise, through thoroughly establishing the entering and returning of samsara, prevents the evil tendencies of the inner mindstream and unerringly shows the method of entering the correct path. If you consider it to be inner learning, you must also explain that there is a method of intelligence superior to it. It is also unreasonable to think that just because it is epistemology, it is not necessary for the pursuit of liberation, because its meaning refers to rational learning, and these treatises are generally the main method of understanding the intentions of all the scriptures through correct reasoning, so it is also epistemology. It is only epistemology and not inner learning, for example, only establishing the methods of epistemology, metaphors, debaters and counter-debaters, and so on. Secondly, some say that these treatises are only needed to refute the wrong views of other external schools, so in places where they are not present, there is no need to listen and think, etc., which is also destroying the foundation of the Dharma and is a wrong view that abandons the true Dharma. Because this treatise thoroughly establishes the methods of preventing the absence of past and future lives, the absence of liberation and omniscience, and the clinging to the aggregates as pure, pleasant, permanent, and self. So in places where there are no outsiders, is it necessary to eliminate the clinging to the aggregates as pure, pleasant, permanent, and self, etc., in one's own mindstream? Is it necessary to lead to the definite understanding of the existence of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, and past and future lives, liberation, and omniscience, etc.? Please reflect well on yourself. If it is necessary, it must also be shown that there is another superior method than these rational treatises. Thirdly, some say that these treatises are like salt, which is not a main necessity in itself, but if one understands these, one can understand other main contents.
