is just a part of the body. Therefore, the master Dignāga, in the gateway of reasoning, said: "Perception and inference, along with their fallacies, are for one's own understanding; statements of proof and refutation, along with their fallacies, are for others' understanding." Thus, there are two methods: the method of ascertaining the teachings and the teacher as valid for oneself, and the method of, having ascertained, leading others to follow. The first is perception and inference, according to how one has ascertained. Whether a thing exists or not depends on whether the mind that ascertains it is correct or not. Therefore, to ascertain what is hidden, one needs unerring inference; to ascertain what is manifest, one needs perception, because perception is the measure. Thus, two measures, perception and inference, are spoken of. If one follows the minds of others, one will be deceived. Therefore, to cut off the wrong paths, the two kinds of fallacies, along with their distinctions, are spoken of. For inference to become unerring, it depends on the modes of reasoning that serve as its basis, being able to prove continuously up to perception. And that is of two kinds: sense perception and self-awareness perception. Mental perception is not suitable as a measure that directly shows entering and withdrawing, and yogic perception is also not needed as a component for proving the modes of signs. Having ascertained oneself, in order to cause others to ascertain, the wise strive to enter without error. As it is said, having ascertained oneself, the latter four, the correct and the fallacious, are spoken of as components for leading others to follow. That is also led from the path of negation and affirmation to ascertain, therefore, two, statements of proof and refutation, are spoken of; or, in order to destroy the glory of wrong views that cling to one extreme, refutation is spoken of; in order to cut off the doubt that suspects both extremes, statements of proof are spoken of. In order to cut off the wrong paths of those two, the two kinds of fallacies are spoken of. The complete body of the treatise is also contained in three chapters: two chapters for oneself and one chapter for others. Although there are six chapters in the Compendium of Valid Cognition, examination of examples and examination of elimination are included in self-interest, while examination of refutation is included in the interest of others. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, four chapters are spoken of.
