It is unreasonable to consider the need inferior merely in terms of what is needed to approach destruction, because no other superior basis can be found than that which is established through the basis of hearing, thinking, and meditating. Second, the actual correct need is: In general, there are two types, those whose minds have been transformed by tenets and those who have not. The latter are those who follow the elders of this world, striving only for the means of this life, and do not primarily accomplish the benefit of future lives and beyond. Even if their minds have been transformed by tenets, the Lokayatas believe that there are no past or future lives. Other non-Buddhist schools believe that the benefit of future lives and beyond must be accomplished. The Charvakas acknowledge that what is to be accomplished in future lives and beyond is merely higher rebirth, and that liberation and omniscience are impossible, because defilement is the nature of the mind and therefore cannot be separated. Other schools besides these two and our own school think like this: Is there a way to stop the suffering that continues from one life to the next, or is there not? If there is, and we do not strive for that method, we will fall away from great matters, so we strive to find that method. In general, having discrimination means that we ourselves engage in thinking and researching such a meaning, and seek whether such discrimination exists or not. And we seek a teacher who, by following him, can unerringly show the difference between those who desire liberation who are not deceived and those who are deceived. Having searched in this way, we meet a virtuous friend, and those who seek benefit from liberation, who excel others in wisdom, who are impartial, and who are greatly concerned with meaning, say: I do not take sides with Buddhism, nor do I hate Samkhya and others, but whatever words are reasonable, I completely accept them as a teacher. As it is said. First, we rely on a virtuous friend, but later we must determine things by our own power. Therefore, when examining which system is the correct side, the teaching of the Sage, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is uniquely established as without fault, and therefore we will recognize him as the teacher. Therefore, these treatises on reasoning also,

And the flawless Dharma encompassed by the teachings of realization, and the Teacher, the authoritative person who expounds it, and the Sangha who properly accomplish the meaning of the teachings, that is, to ascertain without error the way to establish the Three Jewels without error through reasoning, is the purpose of the treatises. In terms of the order of arising in the continuum, one first attains the state of higher realms and later attains definite goodness, but the order of ascertainment by valid cognition is: first, liberation is ascertained by valid cognition, and then the higher realms, which are extremely obscured, are ascertained, because one is not deceived about the main point. For others, too, it is inferred accordingly. As it is said. First, the four truths are ascertained by the reasoning of intrinsic existence, and then one infers without being deceived about the extremely obscured meaning of how the Teacher spoke. In the Four Hundred Verses, Aryadeva says: "If one has doubts about the hidden meanings spoken by the Buddha, one should rely on emptiness and have faith only in this." Thus, first ascertaining the meaning of emptiness by reasoning, and then inferring without being deceived about the extremely obscured meaning, is the same as the way it is said. Secondly, the aforementioned purpose depends on the seven treatises, that is, by relying on this treatise, one can ascertain the Teacher Buddha and his teachings by the reasoning of intrinsic existence, and it is difficult to find the supreme means of ascertaining by relying on others. Thirdly, therefore, if one wishes to seek liberation, one should cherish these treatises and strive to hear, think, and meditate. And one should strive to make hearing and so forth the means of entering and returning from samsara, and not do it merely for the sake of debate, because one will also decline and become an obstacle to others' respect for the treatises. Fourthly, establishing the subject matter of the treatise is divided into identifying the subject matter and the way of establishing its meaning. First, some say that it is unreasonable to divide the subject matter of investigation into eight, because all of these added together become the subject matter, these eight
