Therefore, it is not followed in the use of words. Connecting in this way, whether it is sound, meaning, or self-characteristic, whichever is acknowledged as the object of convention, the same fault will occur, so it is unreasonable. Therefore, it cannot be said that "white cow hair is the true meaning of a cow," because white cow hair is not followed in the use of words at the time of verbal agreement. This is universal. If this is the case, then the object of the thought that "white cow hair is a cow" will be truly established. If this is established, then the basis of the convention—white cow hair—and the object of the convention—things other than a cow—will become one, so in this way, a cow will not be followed in the use of words. Then, in the use of words, is a black curved horn agreed to be a cow or not? If not, it will be impossible to understand. If it is, then the conceptualization of the agreement will become something that can be established and introduced. If you ask this, there is no fault. Because in the use of words, the cow that follows the black curved horn is agreed upon, so when you see the black curved horn, you can understand that it is a cow. Because when making an agreement based on white cow hair, the characteristic of having blackness, etc., is taken as the reason for making the agreement. Just as the collection of sound and impermanence is the object of valid cognition, the collection of white cow hair and things other than a cow is not agreed upon. Because the agreement is made in order to understand that the black curved horn is a cow in the use of words, and not because it is not agreed upon in order to know that it is a collection of white cow hair and things other than a cow. Then, it is unreasonable to agree that white cow hair is a cow, because it is not the object of agreeing to be a cow. If you think this way, it is unreasonable. Because it is unreasonable to express white cow hair with the word "cow," because the collection of white cow hair and a cow is not the object of expression of the word "cow." Although the main object of the agreement is as previously stated, the sound and meaning that appear as white cow hair and things other than a cow also become the object of the agreement. Fourth, relying on these to understand the classification of excluding others. Among them, the views of those who say that sound is the object of exclusion and sound is the object of establishment are described separately, as well as establishing that the conceptualization of sound is the object of exclusion, and the classification and definition of excluding others. First, in the commentary on the Compendium of Reality, the scholar Kamalaśīla says that sounds directly establish and negate, and sound is the thing of

Therefore, the assertion that "establishment itself is the meaning of words" is the view of those who assert that the meaning of words is establishment. Those who assert negation, however, believe that, in the ultimate sense, words cannot express the self-nature of things at all, because all verbal cognitions engage with different meanings in a non-differentiated manner due to illusion. They believe that whatever is related to things through mediation is deceptive, but non-deceptive in meaning. Because whatever is imputed by discrimination comes from the power of experiencing things that are different from the essence that is non-different from meaning; and because it appears as different from others, it is deceptive, but it is certain that being different from others is simultaneous with meaning; and because the realization of the thing that negates others is the result, it is called "other-negation." Therefore, as it is said, the meaning of words is proven to be negation. Just as other schools argue that the thought of "a pot" does not appear to negate, cut off, or reverse, but appears as an independent establishment, so too, all verbal cognitions engage by the power of things, and therefore only engage in establishment, not in negation. They assert this. Because there is more doubt about verbal cognitions of establishment engaging through establishment, the teacher extensively explained the reasoning to prevent this doubt. Because there is less doubt about verbal cognitions of negation, he only said, "Because there is no entity of non-things, the entity is the expressible, the cut-off, and not so." For the non-pot, since there is no entity at all, it should not be considered whether the word that expresses it takes the object as establishment or as cutting off the object to be negated. Such an explanation is not permissible in the meaning of this treatise, so it should be connected as follows: For other schools, it is not appropriate to consider whether the word that expresses the non-pot takes the object as establishing the non-pot or as cutting off the object to be negated, and then assert that it engages through establishment, because merely the expression of the word directly sees the other-negation that cuts off the entity of the pot to be negated. This is its meaning.
