Just like that, because they exist in the aspects of conceptual cognition and elimination, if these are not actually combined, there is absolutely no basis for establishing them in one's own system. And because the meaning of self-character is contradictory, and because the nature of place and time exists without being mixed, etc., they do not distinguish the words of mixed and unmixed nature of place and time. Because they do not understand the meaning of considering valid signs as fabricated, if a self-characterized object exists in the morning, it is contradictory for it to exist in the evening; if it exists in a variegated object, it is contradictory for it to exist in a yellow object; if it exists in the east, it is contradictory for it to exist in the west, etc. If they consider this to be the basis of self-character, they see it as contradictory to those establishments, and they cannot establish it except by placing it in conceptual cognition. And they believe that what is made is a valid reason, but it is not capable of performing a function. Because the nature of things is one, from what mind do different natures arise? etc. Different, if there is none, then they change in simultaneous arising and ceasing. etc. Consequence does not arise from that which follows, and clear things do not follow, and other followers do not appear. etc. Because they do not understand the meaning of these words, if a pot and a woolen cloth are the same substance, then the pot and the woolen cloth both become the same substance, and arising and ceasing become one. Therefore, they say that things such as pots and woolen cloths are neither the same nor different from the substance. When there is fire, there is no smoke, and when there is smoke, the fire has ceased. Therefore, they say that the cause and effect of fire and smoke, etc., are neither the same nor different. Those meanings that exist in knowledge, in this way, have the nature of being contradictory. etc. Because they do not understand the meaning of these scriptures, if it is said to be self-characterized, then it is contradictory to be a generality and to have a common basis, etc. They make many such establishments. Similarly, the ox that indicates time and the time of convention do not follow each other, and because a self-characterized ox that follows both does not exist, they say that indication is only applied to non-entities, and it is impossible to apply indication to self-characters. Therefore, they say that the relations of all things are not truly real. Because it is said in this way, they say that fire and smoke do not have the nature of a relation, and the difference between what is made and what is impermanent is merely imputed by conceptual cognition, so it is not the nature of difference. Thus they say. Second, the errors in the case of both Madhyamaka and Pramana in the answer.

Establishing the basis and the actual answer. Firstly, when analyzing the Madhyamaka system, if one thinks that sprouts do not arise from seeds, etc., by their own nature, then one thinks that sprouts have not arisen, and thus one cannot establish anything other than saying that all establishments of sprout arising, etc., are in relation to others. And if one accepts in one's own system that sprouts arise from seeds, one thinks that sprouts do not arise by their own nature, and thus if one accepts that sprouts arise from seeds, one establishes the ultimate truth of no self-nature, and if one accepts that sprouts have no self-nature, one destroys the conventional truth of producing results. The root of the endless faults, such as the sixteen inverted thoughts that arise from holding each of the two truths as valid and refuting the other, is: if it is merely imputed by thought, then it is thought to contradict the action of producing results. It is precisely because of this that all phenomena have not even an atom of self-nature, and only by accepting no self-nature is action reasonable, and it is not reasonable otherwise. The obstacle to ascertaining the distinction between the two truths without inversion is precisely the holding that mere imputation by thought and action are contradictory, as previously stated. And if one holds this, one has turned away from the ultimate intention of Master Nagarjuna, so one must be skilled in how these two are not contradictory. Similarly, in this treatise on reasoning as well, if one does not understand that the object of thought is established by reasoning as merely imputed, but holds it to be established as the ultimate reality of things, one will be slandering the conventional truth, and in that case, the establishment of the ultimate truth will also be impossible, because it must be realized by relying on the conventional truth of the subject to be proven, the means of proof, etc. And also, the grasping of self of a person will not become non-erroneous, so one must accept that liberation is impossible. Furthermore, if one verbally says that one is refuting the object of thought as established by its own character, and because one cannot easily establish its own character as the object of thought, one can only accept that it is merely a presumption of thought or exists only in the aspect of elimination, and there is no place to establish the ultimate truth, then one will be slandering the aspect of the ultimate truth. Therefore, in one's own system, it is well established by valid cognition that all conventional truths are merely imputed by thought, and one is able to establish that all things are established by their own characteristics, and this is understanding the distinction between the two truths.
