Even within the enclosed interior, the mind does not exist by its own nature; nor does it exist in external places like the hands; and apart from the internal and external, it cannot be found by its own nature. Whatever is not the body, and is not true apart from it, the mind is not mixed with the body, nor is it separate and independent from the body, that little bit of self-existence is also non-existent, therefore the mind is empty of its own nature, and that itself is Nirvana by its own nature. Secondly, if the knowable exists before the object, then what does the root consciousness arise from? Because the causal condition of the object has not appeared beforehand. If consciousness and the knowable are simultaneous, then what does the root consciousness arise from? Because the root consciousness has not arisen, the causal condition of the object has not arisen, so it cannot produce. If the causal condition of the object arises, then consciousness has already arisen, so there is no need to be a producer. However, if the root consciousness exists after the knowable, then at that time, from what cause does the root consciousness arise by its own nature? This is unreasonable. If it arises from the destruction of the previous moment, then it will become that the sprout arises from the destruction of the seed. If it does not arise from the destruction of the previous moment, then there are two situations of whether there is an interval or not at other times. If it is the first case, it is actually impossible to produce. If it is the latter case, if all self-entities are offered to all, then it will become a simultaneous mixture. If there are two cases of interval and no interval, then the establishment of truth will disappear, thus establishing as non-truth. Fourth, meditating on the four mindfulnesses: As mentioned before, it is not possible to realize that the arising of all phenomena is established by its own nature. As stated in the "Sutra of the Inexhaustible Intelligence of the Noble One," one should realize that all phenomena encompassed by conditioned and unconditioned dharmas are not established by their own nature. Secondly, refuting the arguments against the unreasonableness of the two truths includes refuting the fault of being too extreme, refuting the fault of being boundless, and showing that there is no proof for the understanding of meaning being established as true. The argument for the first is: If previously applying before and after to the object and the subject, thereby preventing establishment by its own characteristic, then the same fault will apply to wanting to establish as conventional truth. If establishment by its own characteristic is impossible, then there is no place to establish any dharma, so it will become that there is no conventional truth, then for the two truths

exists, but neither exists. If forms, sounds, etc., are conventionally conceived by the mind, believing that they truly exist by their own nature, then they exist as true from the perspective of the one who clings to them. However, from the perspective of the object itself, they do not truly exist, so you acknowledge that they exist conventionally. If that is the case, then your conventional existence is like a rope that is not a snake, but from the perspective of clinging to it as a snake, the snake exists. Conventional existence is merely established by other minds presuming it to exist, and if that is the case, then how can sentient beings ever transcend suffering even in conventional existence, and thus it would be impossible to attain liberation. Because all existence is merely a matter of perverse presumption. If you accept this, then establishing a view for the purpose of attaining liberation would be meaningless. The answer is: the conventional existence acknowledged by the Madhyamikas is not the meaning of conventional existence in the Madhyamika system itself, which is merely the presumption of existence by other minds with true clinging, which are deluded about the object of clinging, and the conceptual thoughts of the mind. Because in our own system, after realizing that all phenomena that are considered to be objects of the view that realizes the nature of reality are empty of inherent existence, the subsequent arising of causes and effects, etc., if one can establish with certainty that the existence of conventional phenomena is established by valid cognition without confusion, then that is the meaning of conventional existence. If one does not understand this now, and if one does not know how to establish actions and agents as established by valid cognition in one's own system, then there is no establishment of conventional existence either. The way to establish conventional existence in one's own system is that the subject, consciousness, and the object to be examined, both of which, as stated in the Root Verses, "The agent depends on the action," etc. These two depend on each other, that is, they are established in relation to each other, and there is not even a little that is established by its own essence. Just as it is known in the valid cognition of worldly conventions, all distinctions are expressed by relying solely on names. Second, when the discriminating wisdom that examines whether phenomena truly exist or not examines emptiness of inherent existence, then does the mind that discriminates not belong to the category of what is being examined, and therefore does it need to be examined as truly non-existent or not? If it does not need to be, then it is the same for others, and everything is truly non-existent, which is wrong. If it needs to be, then the one that discriminates also needs other discriminating wisdom.
