"If liberated" means: This is stating the view of the former, and its meaning is, just as it is said, "Liberation is attained by seeing the truth," if one can abandon afflictions and attain liberation by cultivating the path of the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., then it should be said in this way. The reason for saying this is that the focus of the debate here is whether one can be liberated from afflictions merely through the path of the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., and also because this is much clearer than the debate about "seeing the truth," etc. Therefore, if one acknowledges that the path of the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., can cause afflictions to cease, and then says that it cannot liberate from all suffering, then this is definitely not its intention. Therefore, by generating the path as previously described in the continuum, those afflictions that are considered common to the two Hearer schools, if they are established as attaining the liberation of the cessation of afflictions when they are temporarily not manifest, then merely temporarily abandoning the manifestation of afflictions will immediately lead to the attainment of the liberation of the cessation of all defilements. This is intended to prevent this view. The reason why this view cannot be accepted is that, "Although there are no afflictions, the power of karma is seen." Even if there is temporarily no manifestation of afflictions, the power of karma is still seen to have the ability to project rebirth in the future. These scriptures explain it in this way. These scriptures must be explained in this way, but some commentaries and Tibetans should not understand it in this way: "Even if there are no afflictions, it is not immediate liberation because the suffering that arises from the fruits of the path accumulated in the past as an ordinary being is seen in Maudgalyayana's son and the venerable Angulimala, etc." Because this is not the function of the suffering arising in this life, but because the function of karma projecting rebirth in the future is irreversible, there is no liberation. This is what it is intended to explain. The third question is: If one attains Arhatship by cultivating the path of impermanence, etc., is it certain that because the craving that is the co-emergent condition for taking rebirth, which is not merely a temporary abandonment, has been completely abandoned by the path, and therefore there is no seed, there will be no future rebirth? If you ask this, then the craving in the continuum of the person you consider to be an Arhat, even if it is not an affliction as described in the Abhidharma, but in the Abhidharma, for all ignorant consciousness, it is considered to have both afflictions and non-afflictions.

Regarding intense craving, it must be admitted that there is both afflictive craving, as described in the Abhidharma, and non-afflictive craving. That treatise shows that there is non-afflictive craving that is commonly acknowledged by both the two schools and the Mahasamghikas. It should be understood that it is absolutely not to be considered that the craving of one's own system has both afflictive and non-afflictive aspects. Therefore, even if one temporarily abandons the manifest craving caused by the self-grasping that clings to a person as an independently existing entity, how could there not be craving caused by the view of the aggregates as inherently existent, which clings to a person as being established by its own nature? Therefore, regarding the previously mentioned abandonment of the manifest, the view of the aggregates as inherently existent and manifest craving that were just mentioned will also not be reversed. If both of those systems abandon the manifest afflictions, then it is the same that the seeds of both have not been abandoned. If there is no difference in whether or not the manifest is present, then distinguishing craving is meaningless. Those individuals who have not realized emptiness, regarding feeling, since they have not abandoned even a little of the ignorance that clings to reality, therefore, due to the cause of feeling, craving will necessarily arise that does not want to be separated from the feeling of pleasure, and craving that wants to be separated from suffering. Because those whom you consider to be arhats also cling to feeling as being established by its own nature. As long as the mind that takes reality as its object exists in the continuum of some individuals in a manifest way, then the manifest craving caused by it will also not be able to be reversed. Fourth, for the mind that is contrary to the realization of the emptiness of persons and aggregates as being established by their own nature, even if the manifest afflictions temporarily cease, they will arise again in a manifest way, just like being in the absorption of non-discrimination. Therefore, not only to attain omniscience, but even if one wants to attain just the fruit of an arhat, it must be asserted that one must meditate on emptiness that refutes subtle objects of negation. Some teachers, such as Shantarakshita, consider that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the selflessness of phenomena, which is the view of the Bodhisattvacaryavatara. Regarding the phrase "due to the cause of feeling," if someone accuses that "the cause does not universally infer the result," this is the darkness before dawn, and is speech that is not allowed to be gathered.
