In actual practice, what should not be given is: as long as the mind is not pure, the body should not be given. And, except for the three Dharma robes, everything else can be given. Second, there are four points to practicing ethics: based on what reason does one begin to guard? The way to begin guarding by closing the door to new defilements. And, purifying the defilements previously committed. The first point is: for the sake of sentient beings' enjoyment, one should give the body and so on. If one does not guard, how can there be enjoyment? If one does not use, what does one give? Therefore, for the sake of sentient beings' enjoyment, one should guard the body and so on. Thus it is said. One should guard the body and so on. For what purpose? For the sake of sentient beings' enjoyment, to become the cause of sustenance. Why should one guard in order to become the cause of sustenance? If one does not use, what does one give? That is to say, if it does not become the cause of sustenance, the purpose of giving cannot be achieved. What is the relationship between guarding and becoming the cause of sustenance? If one does not guard, how can there be enjoyment? That is to say, if it does not become the cause of sustenance, the purpose of giving cannot be achieved, because: for the sake of sentient beings' enjoyment, one should give the body and so on. That is to say, in order for sentient beings to be able to sustain themselves, one gives the body and so on. The Pratimoksha Sutra of Bodhisattvas, the Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra, and the Akshayamati Sutra, among others, have all demonstrated this. The second point is: not abandoning the virtuous friend, and constantly reading the sutras, one should guard the body and so on. That is to say, the benefits of being taken care of by a virtuous friend and the ways of relying on a virtuous friend, etc., are all demonstrated in the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Ugrapariprccha Sutra, and the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, among others. Because it is said in these sutras that in order to understand the conduct of Bodhisattvas and the precepts of Bodhisattvas, one should respectfully and constantly read the sutras in order to understand what is a transgression and what is not a transgression. Therefore, this point of not abandoning the virtuous friend

Moreover, by observing the Sutra Pitaka, it is shown that one should completely uphold the true Dharma, and upholding the true Dharma also shows that protection and other things can be accomplished. This is quoted from the "Sutra Requested by Arya Sagaramati" and the "Sutra of the Valiant Lion's Roar." Third, there are three protections: body, resources, and roots of virtue. First, there are two: protecting against actions that harm the body in future lives, and relying on conditions that benefit this life. First, there are two: protecting against harm to oneself and protecting against harm to others. First, there are three: identifying the harmful actions to be prevented, relying on the means to prevent them, and the way in which these means can avoid harm. First, there are thirteen harms: the harm of not upholding the true Dharma, the harm of demonic actions, the harm of forgetting the mind of enlightenment, the harm of having no interest, the harm of making mistakes, the harm of having no faith, the harm of the defilements of the Acharya and Shramana, the harm of the root downfall, the harm of obstacles to ordination, the harm of the ten non-virtuous actions, the harm of attachment to desirable qualities, the harm of wrongly practicing in special places, and the harm of abandoning the true Dharma. The first is: So what is the protection of the body? It is avoiding harm, as it is said. Upholding the true Dharma without regard for body and life. The "Arya Akashagarbha Sutra," and abandoning evil friends who become obstacles to upholding the true Dharma. Quoted from the "Arya Saddharma Pundarika Sutra." The second is, as stated in the "Prajnaparamita Sutra," and the pursuit of non-virtue as stated in the "Arya Akashagarbha Sutra," and the demonic actions of abandoning virtuous Dharma, and those stated in the "Sutra Requested by Arya Sagaramati." These should be completely abandoned, as stated in the "Ratnamegha Sutra." The third is, abandoning the four black dharmas and relying on the four white dharmas, as stated in the "Ratnakuta Sutra," and as stated in the "Simha Sutra," and as stated in the "Arya Manjushri Buddha-field Sutra," and again, as stated in the "Ratnakuta Sutra," cultivating the mind of enlightenment in all activities, and generating the mind of enlightenment before doing any virtuous deeds, and as it appears in the "Chandrapradipa Sutra."
