That would lead to downfall. Second, generating the desire to protect is: generating joy by contemplating the benefits of diligently studying the precepts, and bodhisattvas who see the benefits should not turn back from diligently studying the precepts. This is confirmed by the Sutra of the Miraculous Display of Perfect Tranquility and the Moon Lamp Sutra. Third, the actual way to protect is twofold: studying the general precepts and studying the specific precepts. The first is: generating joy in studying what is to be studied, and for this, the noble Ratnamegha quotes the words of the Blessed One summarizing the bodhisattva's precepts in the sutras. As it is extensively explained, if someone like me with poor intelligence finds it difficult to understand the bodhisattva's vows, what should be done? Thinking this, it is said: 'By what does one not fall into sin, one should know the key points here.' This means, regarding the precepts spoken by the Blessed One, what kind of boundary of protection is best so that one does not fall into sin? One should understand those key points through this. What are those key points? Namely, the verse beginning with 'Thus, my body.' This is a summary of the bodhisattva's vows, that is, the bodhisattva's precepts are summarized into the six perfections, and these six perfections are accomplished through twelve methods of giving, protecting, purifying, and increasing. The way to accomplish them is: by giving up the three things—body, possessions, and roots of virtue—one accomplishes the nature of generosity; by the three protections that block the entrance of newly acquired defilements, and by the two purifications of purifying the body of past deeds (purifying sins), one accomplishes the nature of ethics. On the one hand, the purification of the body, and on the other hand, the purification of afflictions has three aspects: the nature of the antidote, the favorable conditions for generating the antidote, and eliminating the unfavorable conditions for generating the antidote. The first is meditation and wisdom, the second is diligence, and the third is the nature of patience. The two purifications and the three increases make the six perfections more special. Among them, the purification of possessions makes generosity more special, and the purification of the roots of virtue, which is the antidote to the impurity of self-interest and the impurity of clinging to characteristics, makes all six perfections more special. In terms of increase, the two ways of increasing bodily actions and increasing strength make the six perfections

Increasing the support, increasing enjoyment and thus increasing generosity, increasing the roots of virtue and thus increasing application, increasing virtue has two aspects: the actual and the other. The first has three: generating intention, generating diligence, and placing compassion in front. The second has seven: increasing the roots of virtue through the door of the three aggregates, and practicing the first five, etc. Practicing love, recollecting the Three Jewels, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, giving the Dharma, and practicing the mind of enlightenment. For the sake of all sentient beings, Bodhisattvas should continuously maintain the intention of giving away, protecting, purifying, and increasing their bodies, possessions, and roots of virtue, or the power of their actions. If this is interrupted, it will lead to downfall. This is established by the sources of the Bodhisattva's Pratimoksha Sutra and the Vinaya Sutra of Complete Purification. This is the general practice of engaging in giving away, protecting, purifying, and increasing. Secondly, in terms of specific training, there are two aspects: accomplishing the nature of the six perfections and making the six perfections special. The first has six: accomplishing generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom. The first, accomplishing generosity, has two aspects: generating the desire to give by contemplating the faults of holding on and the benefits of giving, and the actual giving. The first is: generating joy in giving by contemplating the faults of holding on to one's body, possessions, and virtues as one's own, and the benefits of giving them away. This is established by the Moon Lamp Sutra, the Dharani of Limitless Doors, the Bodhisattva's Pratimoksha, and the Questions of the Fierce One. The second, the actual giving, is: may these three—body, possessions, and roots of virtue—become the proximate cause of sustenance for all sentient beings equal to space. The continuity of this thought should be maintained without interruption. And whatever is used—dwelling, vehicles, food, clothing, etc.—should all be for the sake of sentient beings. This thought should be genuine, or if the power of its action is not abandoned, then the downfall of engaging in generosity is prevented. If one enjoys food, clothing, etc., with attachment to oneself, it becomes a downfall of affliction. Even if there is no attachment to oneself, but the power of thinking for the sake of sentient beings is abandoned, it becomes a downfall that is not afflicted. In general
