Distinguishing: It is said in the Sutra of Akasagarbha that fundamental downfalls occur for the sake of gain and respect. It is said in the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis that those who abide in the first bhumi do not incur fundamental downfalls due to gain and respect. Similarly, it has been proven by what is said in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Fierce One. Some may wonder if some ordinary beings can generate the Bodhisattva vows, but not women, etc.? It is proven that they can be generated by quoting the Bodhisattva Pratimoksha. If ordinary beings can generate the Bodhisattva vows, then from whom should they be taken? What should the object of taking the vows be like? What is the manner of taking them? What faults will occur if one breaks the vows after taking them? Firstly, if one takes them from a virtuous friend, one should diligently practice the training of a Bodhisattva, i.e., be skilled in the Great Vehicle, and must possess the two qualities of having the Bodhisattva vows. Secondly, one should examine whether one can protect the vows that are to be protected and then take them. Thirdly, it is proven by the Sutra of the Establishment of Mindfulness on the Sacred Dharma, the Sutra of the Collection of the Correct Dharma, and the Sutra of the Noble Ocean of Intelligence. If there is no virtuous friend, one should visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as present and take the vows. If one cannot take the Bodhisattva vows, one should not merely remain in aspiration, but should take some roots of virtue, and also take roots of virtue for as long as one lives, etc. If one does not take them, it will be a fault, which is proven by the Sutra of Ksitigarbha. It is permissible to take some precepts, and to take them for as long as one lives, etc., which is proven by the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha, which says, "Any son or daughter of good family who has faith and observes the eight-limbed fast," etc. Taking some roots of virtue and promising to learn the precepts for as long as one lives, etc., is only the order of learning the Bodhisattva precepts, and it is not appropriate to say that it is the Bodhisattva vows, because the limbs are not definite. One should also know the benefits of keeping the Bodhisattva vows and the faults of not keeping them. One should also understand the difficulty of the Bodhisattva's conduct through wisdom, and then how should one who desires to take the Bodhisattva vows...

If asked, how should one take it? During the preparatory stage, the virtuous friend should guide well, perform the seven-branch offering, and pray to the virtuous friend. The way of praying is similar to what is said in the commentary on the "Twenty Verses." During the main practice, recite those words or say them yourself. Say, "Khenpo, please pay attention, my name is so-and-so," and then recite the first two verses from the "Manjushri Pure Land Arrangement Sutra," or "Just as all the Sugatas of the past," etc., from the "Bodhicharyavatara." The ending should also be done as described in the "Bodhicharyavatara." It is said that it is sufficient to say the words of the ritual yourself, which is different from the Pratimoksha vows. Having taken the Bodhisattva vows in this way, if you do not protect them, you will also break the vows, so you must protect them. To protect them, you must understand them. Therefore, thirdly, regarding the nature of conduct itself, there are: generally showing the scope of what should be learned, generating the desire to protect, and the actual way of protecting, these three aspects. The first aspect has: for what purpose one engages in protecting what is to be learned, the nature of engaging in protecting what is to be learned for that necessity, the way of engaging in protecting what is to be learned from the perspective of prohibition, and the way in which one will fall if one exceeds the boundaries set by the Tathagata, these four aspects. The first is: in order to pacify all the suffering and discomfort of all sentient beings, and to generate all happiness and comfort. The second is: for that purpose, to diligently strive with unwavering body, speech, and mind, to eliminate suffering and discomfort, to seek the causes for generating happiness and comfort, and to strive to counteract the factors that hinder them. If you do not strive, even abandoning it for a moment will be a transgression. The third is: in order to avert great future suffering and discomfort, to temporarily generate small suffering and discomfort, and in order to generate great future happiness and comfort, to temporarily abandon small happiness and comfort. The fourth is: if you do not examine whether it is reasonable or unreasonable, and you accept or reject, or remain neutral, even if it accords with reality, you will fall. Not taking what should be examined and taken, not abandoning what should be abandoned, and so on.
