When Je Rinpoche extensively taught the Compendium of Trainings in Radreng (present-day Reting Monastery in Linzhou County, Lhasa), Jamyang Chöje made notes. When Je Rinpoche extensively taught the Compendium of Trainings in Radreng (present-day Reting Monastery in Linzhou County, Lhasa), Jamyang Chöje made notes. Here ends the notes made by Jamyang Chöje when Je Rinpoche extensively taught the Compendium of Trainings in Radreng (present-day Reting Monastery in Linzhou County, Lhasa). Homage to the venerable and holy lamas. The Compendium of Trainings is summarized into four meanings: the basis for practice is leisure and endowment; the basis for conduct is the generation of bodhicitta; the nature of conduct itself; and the means of accomplishing conduct. The first is: "This leisure and endowment is extremely difficult to find." This is one verse. Its meaning is that for the basis of practice, leisure and endowment are necessary. Do not merely think that it seems to be so, but fully recognize that this basis of your own leisure and endowment can accomplish temporary and ultimate benefits, while the basis of lower realms, etc., cannot accomplish them. Moreover, leisure and endowment are unstable and extremely difficult to find. Therefore, if you do not seize the root of benefit and happiness here, you will drift towards meaninglessness and non-meaning, and you will not even experience goodness and fortune in dreams. Think in this way and generate the intention to take the essence of leisure and endowment. The second is: Having thought about its great meaning and difficulty to find, "Desiring to bring suffering to an end, and also desiring to go to the end of happiness." That is, generate the intention to completely exhaust all suffering and to accomplish all happiness. Just like yourself, you must also generate the intention to eliminate the suffering and accomplish the happiness of other sentient beings. You cannot differentiate by thinking that other sentient beings do not want suffering and want happiness, but you yourself do, because other sentient beings are also the same in not wanting suffering and wanting happiness. Explaining that meaning is: "Like this, whenever, together with self," is one verse. If you think that although the wanting and not wanting of happiness and suffering are the same, eliminating the suffering and accomplishing the happiness of other sentient beings should be done by themselves, and that you yourself should be done by yourself, then this discrimination arises from grasping self and others as completely separate like blue and yellow. This is also unreasonable, because self and others are relative, like the opposite shore and this shore.

It is accomplished by this, so one should also generate (Bodhi) mind like oneself. The answer to this is: It is enough to transform sentient beings into others by looking at oneself, and to transform oneself into others by looking at sentient beings. The venerable one said that it is not necessary to reach the examination of the view of selflessness of persons alone. By familiarizing oneself in this way, wanting to eliminate all the disadvantages of oneself and others, and wanting to accomplish all happiness, when one generates faith in the source of that, the Great Vehicle, then one stabilizes the root of faith. This is what it means. This meaning is established by quoting the sources of the three, the "Treasure Cloud Dharani," the "Holy Great Play Sutra," and the "Lion's Question Sutra." If one thus generates faith in the Great Vehicle, since the entrance to the Great Vehicle is the generation of the mind, one should generate the mind. This is to say, one should also strengthen the resolve for Bodhi. If one thinks, what are the benefits of generating the mind in this way? In order to generate joy from the gate of thinking about the benefits, it is established by quoting the "Lion's Question Sutra" and the "Holy Tree Adornment Sutra" as sources. Although there are benefits to generating the mind in this way, eliminating the weakness of whether ordinary individuals can generate such (Bodhi) mind is: It is established by quoting the "Holy Vimalakirti Sutra," the "Treasure Trove Sutra," the "Sutra Showing the Absence of Arising of All Dharmas," and the "Sutra of Entering into the Certain and Uncertain Seals." Then, how many kinds of beneficial minds are there? There are two kinds, the mind of wishing for Bodhi and the mind of entering into Bodhi practice. Then, how do these two minds arise? The first is: to become enlightened for the sake of others, and the second is to study the precepts in order to attain Buddhahood. This meaning is established by the "Tree Adornment Sutra." If it is only the mind of aspiration, only promising the fruit, then can one not obtain merit just by that? For that kind of thing, one also obtains merit, it is established by quoting what is said in the "Holy Maitreya Liberation Sutra" and the "Sutra Admonishing the King." If one can generate great merit just by that, then the mind of entering into practice, which promises to study the precepts, will generate great merit, but will ordinary individuals not generate the vows of a Bodhisattva?
