Similarly, to refute other-origination, one must also accept other-origination that arises by its own nature or own characteristic in name. If this is denied, then there is no truth even in the conventional, so it would become without conventional truth. To this objection, it is sequentially established that self-origination does not exist in either of the two truths. This is not a refutation of those who assert things as real, but rather to those Madhyamikas who believe that although there is no origination in the ultimate sense, there is self-origination in name. If there is such a subtle difference in what is to be refuted between the two Madhyamikas, then why did Chandrakirti not make a special refutation of it? It should not be said so. The second is divided into two parts: first, it shows how the imputed and innate clinging are grasped, and then shows that it does not exist; second, it explains the meaning of the two selflessnesses that the Hearers also taught based on the scriptures. The first part is: So, if it is grasped as established by its own characteristic, how is it grasped? To this, first the tenets of the proponents should be stated: When the term "this person did this action, and experienced this result" is established, the meaning of the term established for the person is sought, that is, whether the aggregates of this person are the person himself, or something other than them? If any aspect is found in the different things of the same meaning, and a place is found to establish that person, then it can be established as the doer of actions, etc.; if it is not found, it cannot be established. Therefore, one is not satisfied with merely establishing the term "person", but examines and seeks what the basis of the term is, and if it is established, then it is established that the person is established by his own characteristic. All schools from the Vaibhashika of our own school to the Madhyamika Svatantrika believe so. Similarly, for conditioned dharmas such as form and feeling, and unconditioned dharmas, even the minimal negation of touch separated by the Sutrantikas, up to being placed in space, is fine. When establishing all things that are believed to be established by valid cognition as existent, if one seeks how the meaning of the basis to which the terms of their respective names apply is established, if the meaning found by it is not found, it cannot be established as existent, therefore the opposite of this is established as existent. From the texts of logicians, only that which can perform a function is a self-characteristic, and in the Abhidhamma Sutra.

Just as the heat of fire is used to represent a unique characteristic, this is considered its own characteristic. The self-characteristic established by its own characteristic is very different. Chandrakirti's view is that establishing existence in this way is not even accepted in conventional truth. Regarding how to establish self-conventional truth, the Prasannapadā says: Furthermore, the basis of the body is the special feature of the dependent, if the components of worldly convention are not examined, then the established dependent is the pus, and the basis of the head is the dependent enemy, etc., just like the imputation to persons, etc., therefore this example is not reasonable. This is because in the world, when we say the body of pus and the head of the enemy, the body and the head do not have special features different from them, but just as the base and the dharma are allowed in front of conceptualization, for the statement "the self-nature of earth is hardness," even if there is no non-hard earth, it is spoken of in that way. In response to this, when a consciousness arises from the words body and head that is directed towards them, if one wants to understand whose body and whose head it is by grasping the special basis, then the teacher also wants to exclude the body and head that are not pus and enemy, therefore following worldly customs, using the words pus and enemy as special dharmas to eliminate the listener's doubts is reasonable. Because there is no non-hard earth, there is no need to eliminate such doubts for the statement "the self-nature of earth is hardness," therefore the example and the meaning are not the same. After answering in this way, another reason why the example is not established is pointed out, that is, the special basis dependent body and head, and the special dharma dependent pus and enemy, are established as different in worldly convention, therefore these two are not examples without difference. If we look for what the basis for establishing a name is, we will not find a different meaning, because the enemy's head is called enemy, and if we look for the meaning of pus and its body, we cannot find them separately. This was debated and answered, and refuted, that is, from the continuation of that scripture, if only because of clinging to this, and no other meaning different from the body and head is established, therefore the example itself is established. But this is not the case, because worldly convention does not allow such analytical distinctions.
