It is also stated many times in this way. Moreover, because one of the two is said to be permanent and the other is said to be impermanent, although the two meanings of the expression are not shown as one, considering from where to think and showing the meaning of the essence, based on that meaning, the Alaya is shown, so depending on the meaning of the intention, since it is a synonym of the name, the meaning is the same. In this way, the former is shown as provisional, and the latter also becomes provisional. The commentary on the "Entering the Middle Way" says: Because it follows the nature of all things, it should be understood that only emptiness is shown by the name of Alaya-vijnana. Thus it is said, and the view of Chandrakirti is like that. Although the meaning of the intention is the same, the trainees are not the same. For whom is the Alaya spoken? It is suitable as a vessel for showing the common selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, which is the emptiness of the two, subject and object, because it is for trainees who cannot realize that all persons and phenomena are without inherent existence. The "Entering the Middle Way" says: The Alaya exists, and the person exists, and these aggregates exist only, so this teaching is for those who cannot understand the profound meaning. Thus it is said, and when establishing the Alaya, it is necessary to show that it is empty of external objects. In the commentary on the "Entering the Middle Way", after quoting the sutra that shows the provisional meaning as before, it says: Great wisdom, the nature of emptiness, non-arising, non-duality, and no inherent existence, is included in the sutras of all Buddhas. Thus it is quoted, and distinguishing the first two entities by the difference of existence and non-existence by their own nature is the source of showing the provisional meaning. As in the Lankavatara Sutra, saying that it is included as before, and then saying: This, no matter which sutra it is, in those sutras, this meaning should be included. Because it is said so. So, how does this school establish the definitive and provisional meanings of the three turnings of the wheel? In the first turning of the wheel, all that is said about the selflessness of persons and phenomena is definitive, and merely negating that persons have a self-sufficient, substantially existent entity that does not match the aggregates and characteristics, and not saying that it is negated by its own nature, not teaching the selflessness of persons, and the aggregates and other phenomena are established by their own nature, these are provisional. Its intention is terminology.

That's all. The necessity is that if it is taught that persons and dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, nihilistic views will arise, so in order to avert that, and to teach the coarse selflessness, thereby taming the continuum and introducing the meaning of subtle selflessness. What contradicts the literal meaning are the reasonings that negate existence by own-characteristic. Then, in the second turning of the wheel, it was taught that persons and dharmas are empty of existence in the ultimate sense or by their own characteristics, but that they exist in worldly convention. Because bondage, liberation, etc., are absolutely impossible if established by own-characteristic, and merely because it is necessary to accept the dependent arising of bondage, liberation, etc., it is taught to the Mahayanists who are able to realize that these are empty of establishment by own-characteristic, that the meaning of dependent arising is the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence, so it is the ultimate definitive meaning. In the Heart Sutra and so forth, even when the term "ultimate" is not explicitly applied to the object to be negated, one should still properly and accurately observe that those five aggregates are also empty of inherent existence. In short, since it is said that it is empty of own-characteristic in the brief statement, it must be applied at the time of the detailed explanation, so it has already been applied in meaning. Even if it is not like that, if the distinction of the ultimate is added, as in the Hundred Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, then these must apply to all sutras of the same kind, so it is applied in meaning. For example, it is like a treatise written by one author now, if a topic that is the same but has not appeared somewhere else appears, it needs to be taken there. Therefore, even if one has the Mahayana lineage, but for those who do not have the nature of emptiness of establishment by own-characteristic, so that there is no place to establish cause and effect, bondage and liberation, etc., if it is taught as taught by the intermediate turning of the wheel, great nihilistic views will arise, so in order to avoid that, and to teach the coarse dharma selflessness, thereby taming the continuum and introducing the subtle dharma selflessness, for the first nature and the other two, in name, considering the difference between whether or not the names and terms as desired by the Yogacara school are established, it is taught that they exist and do not exist by their own characteristics. What contradicts the literal meaning is that for persons and dharmas that are not established in the ultimate sense, there is no harm from any reasoning, but for those that are established in the ultimate sense or by their own characteristics, all establishments such as cause and effect are impossible, Madhyamaka.
