It should be observed and analyzed. Thus, it is proclaimed that other schools assert substantial existence. If one wants to establish that all dharmas from form to Buddhahood are merely names, then it is established by three lines of reasoning, such as the absence of consciousness prior to names. If it is said that it conforms to the interpretation of the intent, then it should be explained: Maitreya Bodhisattva, wishing to learn the practice of a Bodhisattva who practices Prajnaparamita, asked how one should train from form to Buddhahood, and the reply was that they are merely names. In this regard, if one contemplates the names such as 'form' together with the object of designation, then 'form' and so on should not be merely names. How should one train that 'form' and so on are merely names? If that object does not exist, then that name should also not be merely a name, as asked. It means that if there is a meaningful object, then there is no need to cut it off with the word 'merely,' and if there is none, then there is no basis for establishing the name, so there is no name either. In response to this, it is said that from the name 'form' to the name 'Buddha,' the name is temporarily assigned to the object, and it is established that assigning the name is temporary. 'Temporary' here means artificial, thus negating inherent existence. If this, like the Mind-Only school, does not negate the true establishment of form and so on, but on the essence of assigning names to form and so on, negates the true establishment of form and so on, then the intent of the previously stated 'from form to Buddha is merely name' will become a demonstration that the essence of assigning 'this is form' and so on is merely assigning a name, and the basis of desire, form and so on, is not merely assigning a name. If this is the case, then when asked below whether form and so on are absent by all characteristics, the reply is 'I do not say so.' When asked how it exists, the reply is 'It exists by worldly customs and terms, but not in the ultimate sense.' Thus, it would be unreasonable to proclaim that everything from form to Buddha is simultaneously absent in the ultimate sense and simultaneously present in the conventional sense. Therefore, this chapter says that all dharmas are originally absent in the ultimate sense but present in the conventional sense, which shows the meaning of the sutra and explains it as literal, which is an unreasonable statement. Therefore, the named dharmas are artificial, existing by virtue of conventional power.

Therefore, it is not that there is no basis for applying names, because it is not that there is no basis object for generally applying names. Therefore, it is not contradictory to say that it exists and is merely named. If the name "form" is not applied to the form, the thought "this is form" arises due to seeing the object of form, but it does not arise due to the power of the name. Therefore, how is it reasonable to say that the so-called form is a name that is suddenly applied? If it is established by the power of the term "form," then even when the name is not applied, there is something established by the power of the term, so it is reasonable for the thought "this is form" to arise. Then, if one does not rely on names but has the thought "this is form" about an object, does that thought arise in Maitreya himself? When asked, he replied that it does not arise. Therefore, for the same reason, form and so on are said to be names that are suddenly applied. This shows that this reason is proof that form and so on are established by the power of terms, and not proof to the contrary. If form and so on were established by their own nature, then the thought "this is form" must arise without relying on the application of names. For example, if a sprout were established by its own nature, it would grow without relying on a seed. Because one object has many similar names, and because one name is used for many meanings, it is also said that form and so on are suddenly applied. If form and so on were not suddenly applied by the power of terms, then the terms of names would all have to be used by the power of their own characteristics. If that were the case, then these would all be unreasonable. Since these reasons have been established, there is no need to argue as in the Collected Topics, because The Fine Grind says, "Moreover, since it is not established ultimately, therefore, it is not established because of seeing the fault of many mixed things such as the speaker and the spoken, and because of uncertainty." It is just like the latter two of the three reasons refuting ultimate establishment. Then, if that is the case, from "form" to "Buddha," grasping which object as the basis for applying names and terms, will it not only become the nature of form and so on that is clung to? Because there is an object that is the basis for applying names, form and so on have a self-established self-
