This clarifies the true meaning. That is to say, for the first two self-natures, in terms of their own characteristics, existence and non-existence, and the two explanations of the Alaya-vijnana, and what is summarized by "etc.", the explanation of the absence of external objects and the ultimate determination of lineage, these four are explained in a provisional way. The latter statement is provisional, and it is understood from the Samdhinirmocana Sutra by establishing the One Vehicle. Considering this, the first three statements in the root commentary of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara are proven to be provisional by both scriptural and logical proofs, but here, the provisional meaning is shown by scriptural proof. In what is said in the Mind-Only school, regarding the two statements of whether to negate or not negate external objects, the sutra that negates external objects says whether the appearance of external objects exists or not, etc. This is like giving medicine to different patients, which is not at the discretion of the doctor, but must be determined according to the patient's condition. What is said in the Mind-Only school is also not under the control of the Buddha's own intention, but is under the control of the trainees' intention, as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra, so it is clear that it is provisional. Then, similarly, what the Bhagavan said in the sutra, about the statement of the Tathagatagarbha, etc., at the end of the quotation, like this, all the sutras of this type that are accepted as definitive by the Mind-Only school are clearly shown by this scriptural proof to be provisional. In the commentary on the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, taking the Tathagatagarbha being said to be provisional as an example, it is explained that what is said in the Mind-Only school is also provisional, and this scriptural proof refers to the explanation of the prohibition of the agent when contemplating dependent origination in the Dashabhumika Sutra. This is not without reason, in the self-commentary it is said that taking the provisional meaning of what is said in the Mind-Only school as an example, the reason why the Tathagatagarbha is said to be provisional is used to prove that this type of sutra is accepted as definitive by the Mind-Only school as provisional, therefore, this scriptural proof says one of the two statements, that is, here the Lankavatara Sutra is quoted, in which the Tathagatagarbha is provisional, and the nature of all sutras is contained within it. The prohibition of other agents refers to the word "only" in the statement "only mind" in the Dashabhumika Sutra, which is said to be the knower that does not negate external objects, but not negating external objects, is the knower of the provisional meaning. Sutras of this type, like what was explained earlier in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, are not the sutras that show the provisional meaning of the Tathagatagarbha being considered definitive by the Mind-Only school.

It is not so, there is no dispute about these two. The self-tradition is that the essence is spoken of as the definitive meaning, and it is proved by quoting that the basis shown in the commentary is not literal. To that end, it is necessary to first know that the manifestation of the essence is not literal. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'The sutras are taught according to the minds of sentient beings, which are misleading in meaning and not the only truth. For example, a mirage deceives a deer that craves water because there is no water, similarly, the Dharma that is taught only satisfies children, but is not a discourse that elaborates the wisdom of the noble ones.' Therefore, the Buddha taught, 'You should follow the meaning and not be attached to words.' Mahamati Bodhisattva asked, 'The Tathagatagarbha spoken of in the sutras by the Blessed One, its nature is luminosity, it is pure from the beginning, it possesses the thirty-two marks, and it exists within the bodies of all sentient beings. Just as a precious jewel is wrapped in a cloth stained with dirt, it is wrapped and stained by the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas. If it is said to be permanent, constant, and immutable, then how is the teaching of the essence different from the self-theory of the heretics? The heretics also say that the self is permanent, unconditioned, without qualities, pervasive, and indestructible.' The Buddha replied, 'The Buddhas teach the Tathagatagarbha in the realm of emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, etc., which refers to the non-self of phenomena and the absence of appearance, in order to dispel the fear of children who are afraid of non-self and to guide those who are attached to the self-theory of the heretics. This is different from the self-theory of the heretics. Present and future Bodhisattvas should not be attached to the self.' The Buddha taught the Tathagatagarbha for the sake of those who have fallen into self-view, so that they may possess the intention of abiding in the realm of the three doors of liberation and quickly attain enlightenment. In order to dispel the views of the heretics, the Tathagatagarbha should be made to conform to non-self.' Because of fear of prolixity, it was not quoted in detail. Therefore, its intention is directed towards the emptiness of the non-self of phenomena, and its necessity is to abandon the fear of non-self and to gradually guide those who are attached to the self-theory towards non-self.
