If one wants to refute, merely saying that what is obtained by knowledge that is not mistaken cannot be refuted. As it is said in the Clear Words, "What is the use of including the silent observation in worldly terms? We also say the same, that the self's nature can be obtained merely by the inverted conventional." Because of this. Even on the basis of admitting that the view that the dharma as the basis is established only on that has been lost, although other explanations and this way of explaining are inconsistent, the tenets of refuting self-existence are not inconsistent. After they have refuted the meaning, now they will refute the example. When Buddhists argue to the Vaisheshikas that sound is impermanent, even if according to both views, the four great elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, and the qualities of space as dharmas, are not established by the measure that measures them, it can be pointed out what the meaning of sound is, which is the basis of becoming a measure. But for those who argue that eyes etc. are not born from the self (pudgala), those who say that they are empty of nature and those who say that they are not empty of nature, even if neither can measure existence by nature and non-establishment by nature, they cannot point out to each other such a nature of dharma, so it is different. For this, those who have virtues, etc., those of the Svātantrika, even if there is no commonality that abandons such differences that can be pointed out to each other, they cannot argue that a commonality that is not distinguished by real existence and true existence can be taken as a dharma, because if it exists by nature, that means it exists by real existence. Therefore, it is because of the key to the inconsistency in the degree of the object of refutation that this has happened, so when arguing that sound is impermanent, even if according to the views of those two, the difference distinguished by the two differences is not established, it can be pointed out that sound is being argued, but it is not like those two saying that the measure of measuring sound has become the measure of such a meaning as sound. That is when the former arguer admits existence by nature, although the Prāsaṅgika refutes the former arguer, the latter arguer does not distinguish by whether it exists by nature or not, and there is no way to point out the way of establishing by the measure of measuring the dharma. It should also be known that the reason for the non-establishment of the reason is by those reasonings. The virtuous one himself also said that the internal sources of generation, etc., have the causes and conditions that produce them, because that

Because the king said so, regarding the meaning of the reason, if what is said is conventional truth, then it is not established for you, and if it is ultimate truth, then it is not established for us. Therefore, criticism is made by examining the two truths. Regarding whether the subject is an illusion or not, it is reasonable to criticize by examining the differences. The reason for this is, as stated in the 'Entering the Middle Way': 'By seeing all things as true and seeing all things as false, one can obtain the two natures of all things. Whatever is the object of true seeing is the very nature of seeing falsehood, which is said to be the conventional truth.' This means that the key is that the two obtained by seeing the correct knowable and seeing the false knowable, that is, the wrong knowable, are said to be the meaning of the two truths. If the two examinations of the two truths are not made for the reason, one should ask what the meaning of the reason is. In the case where three examinations are made without distinguishing between the two, but only with such things, one should ask what should be established as the reason. Such criticisms, because one's own statement does not conform, establish not admitting self-continuum, and establish what is to be established by the argument of one's own school that is established for the opponent, only for the sake of dispelling wrong discriminations. If one thinks that it is enough for any one to be established, taking the debate of worldly people as an example, that is enough, and for both establishment and refutation, Dharmakirti, who advocates that both must be established, should also admit the former view, because it is enough for oneself to be established for the harm of the teachings and the direct perception for one's own benefit. Therefore, in the 'Lamp of Wisdom', in the context of other criticisms, either in an autonomous way or in a refuting way, here the translation of 'autonomous' is like this, and the two words 'self-continuum' have the same meaning. Without relying on the opponent's commitment, but from the way of abiding of things by valid cognition, autonomously determining the way of establishing the two subjects and the way of the reason, etc., after the inference of realizing what is to be established arises, this is the meaning of self-continuum. That is, for the opponent who believes that existing things exist by their own nature, before what is to be established is established, without distinguishing whether it exists or not by its own nature, but measuring the way of establishing by valid cognition.
