Furthermore, if one plants a fir tree, one would fall into the fault of calling it planting a deer tree. If we apply the reasoning for saying that, it is because when the world's hand hurts, one feels the pain oneself, so those two are not different from the world. It must be said that way. These are not only spoken of in the world, but must also be thought of in the same way, because the planted seed and the hurting hand are not trees and people, and if one cannot establish planting trees and that person hurting, then those two would become non-existent, and all designations would be destroyed. The key to those reasons is that the innate self-grasping of phenomena, as explained by the Svatantrikas, should also be regarded as imputed. If that is the case, what is it that the cognitive obscurations obscure? The commentary on the "Entering the Middle Way" says: 'Among them, the habitual tendencies of ignorance are obstacles to completely cutting off knowable objects, and having habitual tendencies of desire and so on is also the cause of such actions of body and speech. The habitual tendencies of ignorance and desire and so on will only cease in the omniscient ones and the Buddhas, but not in others.' From this statement, it is clear that the source of this way of identifying things does not come from the undisputed treatises of the father and son. The actions of body and speech, such as the jumping of an Arhat like a monkey, and the evil deeds of body and speech such as calling others 'blind,' although prevented, are like those that cannot be corrected. Also, the word 'also' indicates that the habitual tendencies of attachment and so on are also obstacles to cutting off knowable objects, so all the habitual tendencies of afflictions are cognitive obscurations, and all the dualistic and deluded aspects, which are their results, are included therein. The nature of habitual tendencies is explained in the commentary on the "Entering the Middle Way": 'Whatever defiles the mind-stream, becomes an obstacle, and follows after, that is a habitual tendency. The ultimate of afflictions, familiarity, root, and habitual tendency are different names.' To abandon this cognitive obscuration, there is no other method than the path of realizing suchness as previously explained, but whether or not all the limbs of the method are complete, and whether or not one has become accustomed to it for a long time, this is what causes the difference in abandonment between the great and small vehicles. In the scriptures, there are many different ways of identifying the two self-grasps and the subtle and coarse differences between the two selflessnesses.
