Since other schools consider the clinging to the self of phenomena as an obscuration to knowledge, this school considers it as an affliction. For example, Buddhapalita, seeing beings threatened by various sufferings, in order to liberate them, he wanted to explain the true nature of things, and therefore composed the Root Verses on the Middle Way. And that true meaning is emptiness of inherent existence, because the darkness of ignorance obscures the eye of wisdom. When we conceive of things as having inherent existence, attachment and aversion arise. When we dispel the darkness of ignorance with the light of understanding dependent origination, and see that things have no inherent existence, attachment and aversion do not arise towards what is impermanent. As evidence for this, the One Hundred Treatises quotes: "The seed of existence is consciousness, objects are its field of activity, if one sees no self in objects, the seed of existence will cease." Therefore, ignorance, which is one of the two, attachment and aversion, is described as the clinging to the truth of things and the seed of existence. To reverse it, one must see no-self, and that also means seeing that things have no inherent existence. Therefore, clinging to the true existence of the self of persons and phenomena is considered to be afflicted ignorance. In the commentary on the One Hundred Treatises, it also says: "Consciousness excessively imputes the self-nature of things, and due to afflicted ignorance, it is attached to things and becomes the seed of entering into samsara, when it ceases completely, samsara is reversed." Furthermore, the Commentary on Entering the Middle Way also says: "Ignorance is the imputation of the non-existence of the self-nature of things, it is the nature of obscuring the seeing of selflessness, this is conventional truth." Thus, afflicted ignorance, which is completely included by the limb of existence, establishes conventional truth. Therefore, clinging to the truth of things is clearly explained as the first of the twelve links, afflicted ignorance. Since this innate ignorance has clinging to the self of persons and phenomena, the innate clinging to the self of persons is also afflicted ignorance. Therefore, sometimes ignorance is said to be the root of samsara, and sometimes innate view of the transitory is said to be the root, these two are not contradictory. Innate ego-grasping

The object of the earth is the basis for grasping "I," therefore, grasping that a person of another continuum is established by his own nature is the self-grasping of a person, but it is not the view of the perishable aggregate. This way is the sublime view of the noble father and son. In the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness," it says, "Those things born from causes and conditions, whatever is truly realized, that is what the teacher called ignorance, from which the twelve branches arise." It is said that knowing things to be empty of inherent existence stops ignorance, and from that the twelve branches cease. Because the similar kinds of ignorance arise one after the other, it is called twelve branches. In the "Hundred Treatises" it also says, "How the body has power over the body, so does delusion change everything, therefore all afflictions are destroyed by destroying delusion. If dependent arising is seen, delusion will not arise. Therefore, with all effort here, that very statement should be proclaimed." Thus, it is said that to reverse ignorance, one of the three poisons, it is necessary to see dependent arising. The meaning of dependent arising is the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence, which is stated many times in this system. Therefore, all Madhyamaka reasonings are branches for refuting the grasping of ignorance, the root of samsara. One should recognize how one's own innate ignorance grasps, and strive to eliminate it, and not be pleased with scholars who only speak and debate about tenets. Then, how is it that there are not two different kinds of innate grasping of self of phenomena and self of person, as the Svatantrikas say? Regarding this, grasping the person, whose aggregates and characteristics are different, as a self-sufficient, substantially existent entity, is grasping the limbs and other qualities of the person as a substantially different entity, which does not exist for those whose minds have not been changed by tenets. In the "Entering the Middle Way" it says, "Because the world only plants a seed, and says 'I gave birth to this son,' and also thinks 'I planted a tree,' therefore, birth from another does not exist even in the world." As such, Buddhapalita also said, just planting the seed of a tree and giving rise to a tree, pointing to the tree and saying 'I planted this,' thus establishing a name, so one does not grasp the two as substantially different.
