Just as the parts of a chariot cannot be the chariot, so too, the person who is nominally designated in dependence on the aggregates cannot be the aggregates. If you think that just as a chariot is nominally designated in dependence on a collection of parts, and that the mere collection itself is the chariot, so too are the aggregates, then you must accept that what is nominally designated in dependence on it is not the basis of designation, just as blue and eyes, etc., are nominally designated with the elements as their cause. Pots and so forth are also similar to the self, so there is no uncertainty about them. It is also said in the Entering the Middle Way: The sutra says that the aggregates are the basis, therefore the mere collection of aggregates is not the self. If the sutra says: What do ascetics and brahmins regard as the self? They only look at these five aggregates. Since the sutra says that the aggregates are the object of the view of self, are they therefore the self? This is not showing that the aggregates are the object of the view of self in a way that establishes it, but rather it is only negating with words that there is an object of the view of self other than the aggregates. For other sutras say: Form is not the self, etc., negating that each aggregate is the self. It is said in the Entering the Middle Way: Because the Teacher said that the aggregates are the self, if you therefore think that the aggregates are the self, then this is negating a self other than the aggregates, because other sutras say that form is not the self, etc. Through these, one should also understand the meaning of the word 'view of the transitory collection' as it is spoken of in the sutras. These are the identification of the object of the innate self-grasp, which has two aspects, object and mode, as existing nominally. The object of the mode is the grasping that the self exists by its own nature, and therefore the self is established by its own characteristics. This does not exist even nominally. The object of the innate view of the transitory collection that grasps 'I' is 'mine'. The mode is the grasping that 'mine' is established by its own characteristics. If the aggregates are not suitable as the object of the innate self-grasp, then the negation in the sutra 'Form, etc., is not the self' is not reasonable, because they cannot be the object or basis of the innate view of the transitory collection that grasps them as the self. The grasping of the aggregates and the self as either one or different is both conceptually imputed grasping, not innate, so there is no fault. However, if it exists as grasped by the innate view of the transitory collection, then it is one.

Since I do not go beyond other meanings, it is also reasonable to prevent it after investigating in that way. Those have shown that there is proof of the scriptures and no harm. The reason is that the aggregates are the object of my clinging, and I am the one who clings. Therefore, consciousness or any other aggregates should not be "I", otherwise the agent and the action will become one. This is the intention of the noble ones. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: "If the wood is the fire, the agent and the action become one." It also says: "Fire and wood, with the order of I and clinging, together with pots, cloths, etc., are completely explained." Therefore, it is said like this. Furthermore, it is said in the Root Wisdom: "Likewise, one should know clinging." Just as the two, action and agent, are established in dependence on each other, and are not established by their own nature, so too are clinging and the clinger established. For example, relying on the eye seeing form, it can be well established that the sacrificer sees, and relying on the sacrificer seeing form, it can be well established that his eye sees form. However, the eye that sees form is not the sacrificer, and the sacrificer who sees form is not the eye, and this is not contradictory. Similarly, just as when the eye is painful or has cataracts, one can establish the statement "I am in pain or have cataracts", and one can also establish the statement "My eye is in pain or has cataracts", but the eye itself is neither "I" nor "mine", and neither of these can be established by worldly conventions. In this way, the remaining internal and external sources and "I" should also be known to be established as the hearer, etc., in dependence on one. To this, the outsiders see that the dharmas such as the eye cannot be established as a person, so they acknowledge a person such as the seer of other entities from these. Other self-schools see the harm to other entities, so they consider consciousness or other dharmas of the aggregates to be a person. Those who understand the Buddha's teachings without distortion understand that there is no essence other than mere nominal imputation, and thus attain liberation, as it is said in the commentary on the Entering the Middle Way. One must be skilled in establishing that which is merely imputed, and be able to well establish the accumulation of karma and the experience of results, etc. Therefore, how does the selflessness of a person exist in the collection of limbs?
