If sentient beings have names that exist without being determined by the minds that establish conventions, although they cannot be applied, their meaning exists; otherwise, the meaning of clinging to the two selves would also not exist. The Yogacara and Svatantrika Madhyamaka schools believe that the two selves, which are negated and established as selflessness on the person and phenomena, and the ways of clinging to them, are only different in meaning. However, this school does not distinguish the two selflessnesses from the perspective of the basis of the subject, and does not acknowledge differences in the inherent self. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "This selflessness is for liberation, Therefore, it is said to be divided into two: person and phenomena." This means that it is distinguished by phenomena and person, not by the perspective of the two selves. In the commentary on the *Four Hundred Stanzas*, it also says: "The so-called self is the nature of things that does not depend on others; the absence of it is selflessness. It is understood as the two distinctions of phenomena and person, namely the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of person." The nature of not depending is not merely a nominal designation, but a self-existent nature that exists from the perspective of meaning. If our own school, from the Vaibhashika to the Svatantrika Madhyamaka, believes that things established by valid cognition must be established by their own characteristics in this way, then wouldn't it be contradictory to what the Yogacara previously believed, that the completely imputed, which is imputed on the nature and differences of forms and other things, exists, and that it is negated to be established by its own characteristics, and said to be established by names and conventions? There is no contradiction, because they say that since it can be established by names and conventions, it is not established by its own characteristics. But they do not think that if you look for the basis of naming that they have named, you will not find it. Therefore, this school acknowledges the existence of what is held to be established by its own characteristics. In their treatises, the reason why they say that nature and difference are names is because they believe that for the minds that perceive these two, just as the grasper and the grasped are far apart, there is actually no such meaning, so they say it is a name. This is different from what this school says is nominal designation. The second point is that the Yogacara and Svatantrika Madhyamaka schools believe that the selflessness of phenomena is not taught in the Hinayana sutras, and the selflessness of person that is taught is further elaborated in the Mahayana on the basis of what was established by the Shravaka schools.

It is considered that there is no reason. The views of the two teachers are contrary to this. First, the way of explaining the absence of self of phenomena from the Hinayana Vinaya Pitaka is: Buddhapalita said that the Blessed One used illusions, echoes, images, mirages, dreams, water bubbles, foam on water, and banana tree trunks as examples to illustrate that all conditioned things are without self. And it is said that there is no reality or non-deceptive reality in them, these are all false, these are all false. It is also said that all dharmas are without self, and the so-called absence of self means absence of self-nature, because the word "self" means self-nature. He said that the examples of the five aggregates being without self are water bubbles, foam on water, banana trees, mirages, and illusions, respectively. And it is said that these are all false. It is said in the Hinayana Vinaya Pitaka that all dharmas are without self, thus explaining that all dharmas are without self-nature, because the meaning of self is the meaning of self-nature. The commentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way also quoted the scriptures spoken for the Shravakas, such as "Form is like a water bubble," etc., to explain the absence of self of phenomena. The commentary on the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning also said that because the refutation of attachment to non-existence is already clear in the Shravaka school, the reason for it is not explained. For the refutation of attachment to existence, there is only one ultimate truth, which is Nirvana that does not deceive sentient beings. All conditioned phenomena are false and have the nature of deception, etc. Although it is said so, because it is not explained many times, without interruption, and with the same argument, the reason for it is explained. On this, Lekden said that these examples show that although they appear as the self of a person, they do not actually exist, so it is the absence of self of a person, not the absence of self of phenomena. The meaning of the word "self" is not the self-nature of phenomena, but the self of a person. If the absence of self of phenomena is explained in the Shravaka vehicle, then the Mahayana will become meaningless, and this is prohibited. The commentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way says that the Mahayana not only explains the absence of self of phenomena, but also explains the grounds, Paramitas, aspirations, and the two accumulations, etc., so it has meaning.
