It is proven with the saying "will not be without" and the knowledge basis of the Ratnavali. The teacher also believes that in the Root Wisdom Treatise, it says: "The Blessed One, with existence and non-existence, knowing the teaching of Katyayana, both existence and non-existence are refuted." It also says: "The Blessed One said whatever dharma deceives is false. All conditioned things are of the nature of deception, therefore they are false." And so on, Chandrakirti proves this. In the Sixty Stanza Reasoning, it also says: "Nirvana is the only truth, when the Buddhas speak, at that time, who is the wise one who would contemplate whether the remainder is wrong?" It is said that the meaning of falsehood is to state the harm of leading away from the selflessness of emptiness, thereby confirming that meaning through the Root Wisdom Treatise. Therefore, even in the Hinayana scriptures, the teaching of the absence of self of phenomena is also explained, which should be regarded as the intention of the noble ones. Even so, in the Hearer's scriptures, it is not asserted that phenomena have an inherently established nature, and if this is not proven, there are many occasions when this is said. The absence of self of a person, according to the tenets of the self-school, both Mahayana and Hinayana, and the views of other schools, is simply the absence of a person as an independent entity whose characteristics are different from the aggregates. The way of this is to hold the basis of grasping at "I" as if this self were the lord of the aggregates, and the aggregates were like his servants. Grasping at "my form," "my feeling," and so on, because the aggregates are grasped as belonging to that self, it is thought that "I" am in control of them. Therefore, like a lord and servant, the aggregates and the nature of "I" are different, appearing as independent, and clinging to their existence as real is clinging to existence as substance. When this is negated, the person becomes merely a designation imputed on the aggregates, and this "merely" cuts off the existence of an entity other than the aggregates. The way of imputation is as stated in the Blaze of Reasoning: "Thus, we also nominally impute the sound of self directly to consciousness, thus, consciousness is the self because it takes rebirth, because it is closely connected with the collection of body and senses." Just as a chariot is established by relying on the collection of limbs, sentient beings are established by relying on the aggregates. It also quotes some sutras, saying that if the mind is tamed, happiness is obtained.

It is said in the scriptures that some believe that attaining a higher status is achieved by taming the self, therefore the scriptures say to settle the mind on the self. The argument states that the one who takes the aggregates is the self, and in order for consciousness to take rebirth, consciousness is established as the self. This teacher does not accept the Alaya consciousness, so he says that the consciousness that takes the body is consciousness, because he does not accept the Alaya consciousness, and others are similar to this. Those who accept the Alaya consciousness believe that the continuum of the Alaya consciousness is the person. The scriptures about the self of the person that those people believe in are not written because there are too many. Although Chandrakirti's school refutes such a real person, it does not refute that the person is merely a nominal designation, but is established by its own characteristics, and clinging to its existence is the belief in the reality of the person, therefore it is the ego-grasping of the person, just like the ego-grasping of phenomena. Furthermore, the independent and self-sufficient real self is the object of clinging to the inner agent, the purusha, which is imagined by the outsiders as something other than the aggregates. Even if one directly realizes that it does not exist and has become accustomed to seeing it, the color, etc., which were previously clung to as real, have not diminished in the slightest, therefore it is explained that clinging to the aggregates as real is meaningless for the arising of afflictions such as attachment. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: 'Because your yoga sees the meaning of no-self, it does not transform those individual entities, because you still cling to forms, etc., as real, what is the benefit of generating attachment, etc.?' And as it says in the commentary on the *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning*: 'If there are those who cling to the self-nature of forms, etc., and want to abandon afflictions, it is impossible for them to abandon afflictions.' To explain this reason, it is said: 'For those who have a place and are endowed with mind, how can great poisonous afflictions not arise? Even if they stay in a secluded forest, they will be bitten by the poisonous snake of afflictions.' The 'place' mentioned here is the object of clinging to reality that is established by its own characteristics. Regarding how others establish a person as imputedly existent, it is said in the Vinaya Pitaka of the Hearers: 'Just as a chariot is nominally designated based on the collection of limbs, so too an sentient being is nominally designated based on the aggregates.' But that is not the meaning, it is established based on the limbs.
