Just as the eightfold noble path has different characteristics from each other, if the suchness of these dharmas, the ultimate truth, the selflessness of dharmas, also has different characteristics, then the suchness, the ultimate truth, the selflessness of dharmas, will also be with cause. If it is born from cause, then it will become conditioned. If it is conditioned, then it will not be the ultimate truth. As it is said in the scriptures, conditioned phenomena are not the ultimate truth. The Middle Way Treatise says: The ultimate meaning is unique. Its commentary also says: The ultimate truth is completely established, and its nature should be known as unique. The Ornament of the Sutras also says: Neither existent nor nonexistent, neither thus nor other, without arising or ceasing, neither decreasing nor increasing, without increase and without purity, the transformation of purity is the characteristic of the ultimate truth. When explaining that the ultimate truth has five characteristics, it is said that it is without arising or ceasing. The commentary also says that it is not existent by the nature of imputation and dependence, nor is it nonexistent by the nature of perfect establishment. The Compendium also says: Is the cause said to exist in conventional truth or in ultimate truth? The answer is, it is said to exist in conventional truth. Again, is discrimination said to exist in conventional truth or in ultimate truth? The answer is, it is said to exist in conventional truth. How are these statements not contradictory? It will be explained how they are not contradictory: In this way, there are two ways of establishing existence in conventional and ultimate truth. The first is: existence established by the power of convention is called existence in convention; existence not established by its power but by its own nature is called existence in ultimate truth. As the scriptures say many times: This is also said by the power of worldly convention, but not in ultimate truth. This is the basis for the Madhyamikas and other schools that assert substantial existence to argue about whether existence or non-existence exists in ultimate and conventional truth. If understood in this way, then the first nature mentioned earlier exists in conventional truth but not in ultimate truth; the last two natures exist in ultimate truth but not in conventional truth, therefore, it is consistent with the Yogacarabhumi-sastra and the Compendium.

As previously stated. Furthermore, in the Compendium, it says: For those who are fully accustomed to language, abiding in names, the object of consciousness, objects with names such as form, existing with the nature of form, that nature does not exist in either the ultimate or true sense. Therefore, the nature of those phenomena with names such as form is not existent, and whatever is imputed by it should be understood as existing by imputation. For those who are fully accustomed to language, having eliminated distinctions, the object of consciousness with names, objects with names such as form, existing with an inexpressible nature, that should be understood as existing in the same way in both the true and ultimate senses. This is also stated. Regarding substantial and imputed existence, the Compendium states: Whatever it may be, not depending on others, and establishing its own characteristics without relying on others, in short, it should be understood as substantially existent. Whatever it may be, depending on others, and establishing its own characteristics by relying on others, in short, it should be understood as imputedly existent, not substantially existent. The example given is the imputation of self or sentient being based on the aggregates. That which cannot be apprehended without depending on other phenomena, and that which must be apprehended by depending on them, the imputed existence, and that which is not established by the power of convention but is established by its own characteristics, these two are not contradictory in this system. Therefore, although the habitual tendencies of the alaya-vijnana are said to be imputedly existent, they do not contradict the ultimately existent as previously explained. However, they do contradict the imputedly existent that is imputed by names and concepts. According to the second way of establishing it, the Madhyantavibhaga states: Meaning, attainment, and accomplishment are considered to be the three aspects of the ultimate. In the commentary on that, it says: The ultimate meaning is suchness, because it is the meaning of supreme wisdom. Supreme refers to the wisdom of uncontaminated equipoise, and as its meaning, it is the object, so it is called the supreme meaning or ultimate meaning. This is the meaning of selflessness, which is suchness, and that is also the ultimate of the completely pure object. There, because the perfectly established nature without the two of self-nature and other-nature is unique, it is said that way. In the Madhyantavibhaga, it says:
