It should not be said that it is non-existent. Thus it is said. The meaning of this is, how can it be said that these dharmas, if one clings to the self-characteristic established by their own nature, are non-existent? Because for it, the measure of such clinging is contradictory. If the mind clinging in this way is not contradictory, it is because the mind itself is a deluded thing. If this is the case, then if delusion exists by its own nature, then emptiness of essence is not permissible in the ultimate sense, and if it does not exist, then even if there is clinging because of delusion, it does not exist. This is unreasonable. Here, too, it is necessary to examine existence and non-existence in the ultimate sense, but the meaning is the same, and the previous examination is easy to understand, so it is explained in this way. In this way, here, without pointing out the fault that the two, the completely imputed and the completely established, do not exist in the ultimate sense but do exist in name, but examining the existence and non-existence of mundane consciousness and deluded consciousness in the ultimate sense, the fault is pointed out. This is to prevent the other-powered from not existing in the ultimate sense but existing in the mundane sense. Because this itself is the dharma nature of the completely established and the binder and basis of imputation of the completely imputed, therefore the wise mainly argue about whether this itself exists or does not exist in the ultimate sense. Furthermore, in the Compendium, it says: "That which clings to the other-powered nature and the completely established nature as the completely imputed nature should be known as the extreme of accretion." And, "The extreme of defamation is that which says that the other-powered nature and the completely established nature are non-existent, which is the defamation of one's own nature." Thus, in the manner of abandoning the two extremes, one should comprehend the meaning of that very thing. It means that for the latter two natures, which exist by their own nature, saying that they are not established there is a defamation of self-characteristics. Just like the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra and this treatise, the extremes of accretion and defamation and the way to abandon them are the same. The completely imputed is also non-existent in the ultimate sense, but not non-existent in name. As it says in the Compendium: "Should it be said that those manifestations are the nature of whatever name and whatever expression they are established by, or should it not be said that they are their nature?" The answer is: "In name, it should be said that they are their nature. In the ultimate sense, it should not be said that they are their nature." Thus it is said.

Therefore, the sutra says, "What is the nature of the completely conceptualized object of consciousness that relies on names that are fully accustomed to terminology?" It says that it is nominally existent, but not ultimately existent. Therefore, just as the completely conceptualized self and duality cannot exist in the knowable, one cannot conclude that all completely conceptualized things do not exist. One should negate substantial existence and ultimate existence, and establish nominal existence and conventional existence. Therefore, some commentaries on the *Exposition of the Thought Sutra* say that the completely conceptualized does not exist in either of the two truths, while the dependent arising of the two objects of grasping and the grasper is like an illusion, existing conventionally. The perfectly established ultimate truth also exists, existing in the manner of being without inherent existence, and is ultimately existent. Such an explanation is not in accordance with the intention of that sutra. In the *Summary of the Great Vehicle*, the *Exposition of the Thought Sutra* is quoted to establish that external objects do not exist, and the internal and external objects of grasping and the grasper are explained as completely conceptualized, which is contradictory. It is also contradictory to the *Yoga Practice Treatise* and the *Summary*, because the quote from the *Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes* is also cited there. Some say that it was composed by Asanga, which is a great lack of investigation. In the *Summary*, most of the chapters are quoted except for the introductory chapter of the *Exposition of the Thought Sutra*, and the difficult points have been well established, so it does not seem necessary for this teacher to compose a separate commentary. Some later people also say that the first nature does not exist even nominally, the second exists nominally but does not exist ultimately, and the third exists ultimately. Explaining the intention of the brothers Asanga in this way is also contrary to this reasoning. In particular, the meaning of dependent arising existing nominally is that mistaken consciousness clings to it as having arising and ceasing, etc., but this is merely clinging, and things themselves do not have arising and ceasing, etc. Such a view is the ultimate slander of dependent arising. Because of this reason, it also slanders the other two natures, so it is a slander of all three natures and the main root of nihilistic views, which has been explained in the *Yoga Practice Treatise* before. Know that the view that the *Exposition of the Thought Sutra* is definitive is an unavoidable contradiction. Second, if, as stated in the *Yoga Practice Treatise* and the *Summary*, dependent arising is ultimately existent, then how does the *Exposition of the Thought Sutra*
