If someone, due to their shallow wisdom, understands the provisional teachings as definitive, in order to dispel doubts and wrong views in both cases, the teacher composed this treatise. In the Collected Sutras, when asked what the profound Dharma is, the answer is: The sutras that teach profundity, such as the Hundred Thousand Verses, the Diamond Cutter, and the Eight Thousand Verses, are cited. The Collections of Reasoning also determined that the meaning of these scriptures can only be understood as they are stated and cannot be forced in other ways. Therefore, they consider these scriptures to be definitive, and others to be interpretative. As it says in the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment: 'All these are mind-only, as spoken by the Buddha, to dispel the fear of children, that is not the nature of suchness.' This denies external objects and affirms that only mind is real, but this is not the literal meaning. Also, as it says in the Precious Garland: 'Just as grammarians teach people to read letters, so the Buddha teaches beings according to their capacity. To some, he teaches about evil to make them turn away from it. To others, he teaches about merit, or some say about both, or some say about neither. Profound, fearful, emptiness with the essence of compassion, is spoken to achieve enlightenment.' The first verse says that the teacher teaches the Dharma according to the capacity of the beings to be tamed. The next three lines begin by explaining from higher realms. Then one line is for those of the two schools of meaning, saying that there is no self of a person, but there are the two, grasper and grasped. Then one line is for some of the Great Vehicle lineage, saying that there is the emptiness of two, without grasper and grasped. Finally, the last three lines are for the sharp-witted Great Vehicle beings who are afraid of the Dharma, beginning with no self-nature and great compassion. Therefore, as long as what is true has not been pointed out, one cannot establish all the phenomena of bondage and liberation, etc. Therefore, one must distinguish which are untrue and which are true. One must first point out a part of selflessness and then gradually guide, establishing cause and effect.

Because if there is no basis, then the temporary emptiness cannot be established either. Therefore, it is said that self-nature is denied to the person, but mostly not denied to the aggregates. The way of denying the other entity of the grasper and the grasped, but not denying self-nature to the two emptinesses is explained. When one is able to realize that the meaning of dependent arising itself is the meaning of no self-nature, then there is no point in making such distinctions, because it is enough to admit that the basis of denying self-nature itself, all establishments are reasonable. Even so, for those of the superior Mahayana lineage who have little danger of holding a nihilistic view of karma and its effects, even if some coarse truths to be refuted are refuted, there are still very many subtle points that cannot be refuted. For those who can refute the subtle points, all the establishments established by valid cognition become nowhere to go, which is very many, therefore, the Sutra Pitaka and the Intentional Commentary distinguish between the definitive and the provisional, which seems to be a great skillful means for leading many disciples into the Mahayana. Just as the Sutra Pitaka is said to be spoken according to the disciples, so also should those who show in accordance with it be known. For the authors of treatises that explain these intentions, it should also be understood that the treatises that do not establish the meaning as their own system according to how they explain it, are also explained in accordance with the disciples and in accordance with their ideas. Secondly, the reason that arises from causes and conditions itself makes the dharmas have no self-nature established by their own characteristics. Thus, the meaning of emptiness by self-nature is said to be the meaning of dependent arising, which the teacher sees as the supreme and unsurpassed Dharma that is superior to other speakers, therefore, the teacher praises the Blessed One in many treatises by the way of explaining dependent arising, as it is said in the Root Wisdom: 'Whoever depends on dependent arising, does not cease nor arise, does not cut off nor is constant, does not come nor go, is not different nor one, pacifies the proliferation of peace, the perfect Buddha speaks of the supreme teacher, I bow down and pay homage.' Also, as it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: 'Whoever abandons birth and destruction, by this reason, the one who speaks of dependent arising is victorious, I prostrate to that venerable one.' Also, as it is said in the Refutation of Disputes: 'Whoever is empty
