The conventional truth is taught by showing various meanings with various different words; and the ultimate truth is taught by explaining difficult-to-understand meanings, showing the one taste of severance of elaborations, and it is not a separate way of establishing it. How is it taught so that it becomes teaching the conventional and the ultimate? The way of teaching these two is as follows: teaching that there are self, sentient beings, etc., is teaching the conventional truth. Moreover, it is not just teaching that much, but it refers to all that shows that there are actions and objects of action in relation to that agent. Explaining that things are emptiness, unborn, etc., is explaining the absence of inherent existence of phenomena; and showing that there are no sentient beings, etc., is explaining the absence of inherent existence of persons. Teaching in that way is teaching the ultimate truth. Here, by the key point of explaining the two, it is also necessary to show that both phenomena and persons exist in the former (conventional truth). Moreover, this is not explaining unborn, etc., by holding another permanent phenomenon as a basis of distinction, but as it is said in the sutra itself, by holding the aggregates and so on as the basis of distinction, it is shown that these are not true, that is, merely severing the establishment of those bases as true, that itself is the ultimate, therefore it is called teaching the ultimate truth. Also, in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Emptiness as taught by the Sugata, Know the distinctions of definitive sutras, From which sentient beings, persons, and individuals are taught, Know that all those teachings are of provisional meaning." The distinction between provisional and definitive is also explained in the Clear Words as being in accordance with the previous meaning. The sutras of provisional meaning are also for guiding disciples to be upright, but that is not the meaning of "guiding," but it is the way of guiding whether or not the meaning of the sutra needs to be guided from that sutra to another. Regarding the need to guide the meaning, there are two situations: for example, "father and mother were killed," here it is said that parents were killed, but in reality, it is necessary to guide parents to the existence and craving of karma, this is one way. The second way is: it is said that happiness and suffering arise from white and black karma, the happiness and suffering produced by these two karmas is the nature of those two, and there is no other nature of those that is not. Therefore, the suchness of the meaning of that sutra is certain there, and it is not permissible to guide it elsewhere, that is what I say. There.

It is like explaining that the truth of the two meanings must be led out from what has already been determined. Therefore, in the Madhyamaka Aloka, it says, "What is the meaning to be determined? It is what is explained by the power of valid cognition and ultimate truth, because they cannot be led by others from there to anywhere else." As it is shown, if it is determined whether or not it needs to be led according to the presence or absence of meaning, then having valid cognition is enough, but it is not enough to have only that, so it is said to be by the power of ultimate truth. Therefore, when it is said that sprouts are born from seeds, etc., although according to the meaning shown, there is proof of valid cognition, but because it is not by the power of ultimate truth, it is a meaning that needs to be led, just as it has already been explained how to lead other meanings from this meaning. Therefore, when it is said that things do not have true arising, this is both in accordance with valid cognition, and because the meaning shown is not the truth of that dharma, and it cannot be led to other meanings, such sutras are of definitive meaning, because they cannot be led to other places by either of the two ways of leading. When determining whether or not it is necessary to lead to other meanings, thereby determining what needs to be led and what does not need to be led, the scriptures themselves are considered the basis for what needs to be led and what does not need to be led. When determining whether or not it is necessary to lead to other meanings, conventional and ultimate truth are considered to be what needs to be led and what does not need to be led. For example, in the Ground of Being Sutra, it says, "Do not rely on the person, but rely on the Dharma, the Dharma has two aspects, words and meaning, and the meaning has two aspects, needing to be led and not needing to be led, and the meaning that does not need to be led is not relying on consciousness, but relying on wisdom." In the Ornament of Wisdom Light Sutra, it also says, "What is the definitive meaning? That is the ultimate truth." In the Teaching of Inexhaustible Intelligence, it says, "Because it has been shown that non-arising, etc., are the ultimate truth, only non-arising, etc., are the ultimate truth, and only those who show them are considered to be of definitive meaning." Do not think that because non-arising, etc., which do not apply the distinction to what is to be negated at that time, are not literal, they are not of definitive meaning, for example, in the Hundred Thousand Verses, this is also a worldly term, not an ultimate truth. Therefore, if the arising of dharmas, etc., is applied in one instance, then it has already been applied through meaning in another instance, so those that are not explicitly stated are also literal.
