It is said to have been composed by so-and-so. Thirdly, if we follow the way of explaining the reality of things by the masters, the two aspects of grasping and being grasped, which are said to be based on external objects in the first turning of the wheel, are interpreted as provisional meanings. The basis for this is the twentieth chapter, which says, "From what does its own seed arise? From what does the appearance of consciousness arise? The Sugata taught that its birthplace is of two kinds." And the necessity is also stated in the same chapter: "The existence of sense bases such as form is taught to those who are to be tamed, according to their intentions, like beings born by transformation." It is like this: when it is shown that consciousness arises from the sense bases of inner and outer, it is for the purpose of realizing that there is no seer or anything else apart from these. What harms the literal meaning are the reasonings that prevent external objects. The imputed nature, which is established as the essence and difference of phenomena, is the realm of phenomena and the sense bases. Therefore, without distinguishing between these two, it is also provisional to say that it is established by its own nature. In the extensive commentary on the Compendium of Topics, it is said that all phenomena are without self-nature, and that this is said with reference to the three kinds of selflessness. In the extensive commentary on the Compendium of Vehicles, it is said that "non-existence" refers to all that is shown by the imputed nature and the examples of ropes, etc., and that the perfected nature is shown by the other-dependent and the four kinds of purification. The sutra appears to be a sutra of objects, so the explanation of the second turning of the wheel as definitive is also accepted by this and those similar to it. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is also forbidden to regard the selflessness, etc., spoken of in the Mother Sutra as literal meanings, and in the Sutra Unraveling the Intent it says, "All phenomena are without self-nature, and all such things are not of definitive meaning." Therefore, the Mother Sutra is considered to be the second turning of the wheel. The way of explaining this as provisional is very different from the way of explaining grasping and being grasped as provisional in the first turning of the wheel. Thus, the eye consciousness, called the habit of ripening, is said to have the sense bases of eye and form in mind, considering the seed and appearance that arise from the ripening of one's own seed.

The meaning is that the content to be expressed by the Hinayana sutras is not appropriate. Based on what are the three types of non-self-nature explained, it is to explain the meaning of the Mother Sutra. The existence of external realms of birth is the meaning of the Hinayana sutras, and if the principle of non-self-nature is not distinguished, and it is believed that there is originally no self-nature in the ultimate sense, it is not explained as the meaning of the Mother Sutra. Therefore, if these are not distinguished, and it is explained that all dharmas are without self-nature in the ultimate sense is the meaning of the Mother Sutra, it is not explained that it is provisional, because such a thing cannot be understood literally, so it is not certain that it is only that meaning, and it is still necessary to explain that meaning, thereby explaining it as provisional. The way to explain it is that the imputed dharmas are not established by their own nature, so they are without self-nature in the ultimate sense; the dependent dharmas are not established in the pure object of the ultimate sense, so they are without self-nature in the ultimate sense; the perfectly established dharmas are both ultimate and without the self-nature of dharmas, so they are without self-nature in the ultimate sense, and that is how it is explained. Therefore, clinging to the literal meaning is not acknowledging the disciple for whom the Mother Sutra was spoken, so for that disciple, it is believed that the meaning of the sutras should be understood as explained by the Saṃdhinirmocana Sutra, so the intention of the latter two turnings of the wheel is the same. Although believing in the very vast, it also prevents understanding it literally, and saying that the meaning of that sutra is the literal meaning, thereby preventing the existence of the meaning of the sutra that is not the literal meaning, the Saṃdhinirmocana Sutra clearly explains that meaning, so that is definitive. The Mother Sutra does not clearly distinguish that meaning, and it cannot be understood literally, so it is called provisional. If it is understood literally, then understanding it literally will become a harm, because it will cling to the slander that all three natures are not established by their own nature, that is what was said before. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is also said: In the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, it is repeatedly shown that "all dharmas are without self-nature" and so on. Also in that it is said, wanting to enter the faultlessness of the Bodhisattva, from there on it is evil.
