In this regard, the meaning of what was said is explained through interpretation, implicitly. The meaning of what was said for the purpose of entering all the well-separated Dharma wheels and vehicles is: If, in all cases of emptiness of the imputed nature of self and difference, and the other apprehended and apprehender, other-powered nature is taken as the basis of emptiness. Then, the emptiness of the first two in the manner of being must become the perfectly established nature. Regarding this, Vasubandhu said in the Destruction of the Three Mothers: "What is called the eye is the eye of the Dharma nature. By the eye is the eye of the imputed and the discriminated. Empty is a synonym for separation. Similarly, ear, empty by ear, etc., should also be applied." Thus, how is it correct to say that the perfectly established is taken as the basis of emptiness, and that self-nature is empty by the other two? Regarding this, in whichever view of the Yogacara or Madhyamaka, when establishing the perfectly established nature of the selflessness of phenomena, What should be taken as the basis of emptiness depends on what the clinging to the self of phenomena takes as the self of phenomena. For example, if one clings to a rope as a snake and wants to eliminate the suffering of fear, one must take the rope as the basis of emptiness and explain that it is empty of the snake. If one takes the rope as empty of the snake as the basis of emptiness and says that it is empty of the rope and the snake because they are different things, that is not correct. Similarly, for the clinging to the self of phenomena, such as clinging to the partless atom and the apprehended that accumulates it, and the momentary consciousness without parts of past and future times and the continuum of consciousness that continues it, etc., these are merely imputed by changing sectarian views, and only those sectarian proponents have them, not other sentient beings. Therefore, merely explaining the emptiness of these non-existences does not harm the innate clinging to the self that has followed since beginningless time. Therefore, it must be explained that the basis of what the innate clinging to the self clings to as the self is empty of the self in the manner of clinging. And, refuting what is imputed by sects must also be understood as a part of refuting the clinging to the self. If this is done, then self-satisfied sentient beings, for things such as seeing and hearing, only to the other-powered objects of outer and inner eye and form, etc.
