That the negation of 'non-existence' merely negates the very nature of a thing, but does not establish another thing that is similar to it and not that. For example, 'A Brahmin should not drink alcohol' merely negates that, but does not say whether or not other drinks should be drunk. And so on. In this regard, establishing or not establishing is the same as abandoning or not abandoning, and other than that is not merely negating what is to be negated. There is no difference between negating with the words 'not' and 'non-existence'. Because both Lekden and Chandra say that negating with 'not self' is a non-affirming negation, and 'Amitayus' must be made a non-affirming negation. Therefore, for negation, all phenomena are also negated by negating themselves and not others. For things, it is not enough to merely cut off what is to be negated, but it is necessary to cut off with words that express themselves, or to appear in the wisdom of self-awareness with the aspect of directly cutting off what is to be negated. Some think that something like 'no-self' is a non-affirming negation, but something like 'no-self for a person' is not a non-affirming negation if it establishes a basis and a collection. Others say that it is not reasonable to say that it is not a non-affirming negation because other dharmas are abandoned in the basis and collection. The difference between the two negations is just as explained before, and it also appears in other treatises. In that case, something like 'A Brahmin does not drink alcohol' also has the characteristics of a non-affirming negation in establishing a basis and a collection. Brahmins and the like are the basis for measuring whether or not to abandon other dharmas after cutting off what is to be negated, and not the other dharmas that are abandoned. Therefore, there are four ways to abandon other dharmas: by implication, directly, both, and by context. As quoted in the commentary on the Lamp of Wisdom: Negation shows by meaning, One word establishes, One who possesses it does not show his own words, Other than not is other. And so on. Among them, showing by meaning is like 'A donor does not eat during the day'. Establishing a thing with one word is like 'What is not born from me exists', both cutting off what is to be negated and directly abandoning other dharmas are contained in one word. One who possesses it is a word that has both abandoning other dharmas by implication and directly, like 'A donor does not eat during the day, there is one who is not thin'. Not showing with one's own words

That is to say, a person is definitely one of either a Kshatriya or a Brahmin, and in a situation where it is not possible to determine which one specifically, it is like saying, "This is not a Brahmin." Whichever of the four ways of excluding occurs, it is a non-affirming negation, and when none of those four are excluded, it is a non-affirming negation other than an excluding negation. Regarding this, some earlier people said that for the Madhyamikas, there are signs and inferences that refute inherent existence, but there are no signs and inferences that establish the absence of inherent existence. This is unreasonable because there cannot be a valid sign without a thesis to be established and a valid inference without an object to be measured. Others say that for the Svatantrika-Madhyamikas, there are signs and inferences that establish selflessness, but for the Prasangikas, there are none. As the Clear Words says, "We are not establishing that this does not exist, but what is it? It is refuting that others consider this to exist." Similarly, we are not establishing that this exists, but what is it? It is eliminating that others consider this not to exist, because we want to eliminate the two extremes and establish the Middle Way. Furthermore, the Prasangikas are said to be merely concerned with refuting the assertions of others. As the Entering the Middle Way also says, "All distorted conceptualizations, the wise say are the result of analysis." Therefore, they say that it is merely refuting the views of others, and not establishing the absence of inherent existence. Saying that it is merely concerned with cutting off the object to be negated is not a characteristic unique to the Prasangikas. As the Blaze of Reasoning also says, "Regarding earth and so on, which are not of the nature of arising in the ultimate sense, it merely makes a refutation, and does not establish that it is of the nature of something else or of the nature of non-existence." Therefore, when refuting that phenomena are established by their own characteristics, the word "merely" in "it is merely cutting off the object to be negated and eliminating the wrong conceptions of others" cuts off the possibility of drawing out other phenomena that are not merely cutting off the object to be negated in the realm of reasoning, thereby preventing the question of whether it is a non-affirming negation, and thus showing that it is an excluding negation. Because it is merely cutting off its own object to be negated and not establishing other phenomena, as previously stated. For example, saying that there is no smoke in the lake is merely a complete cutting off of smoke in the lake, and although it does not draw out other phenomena, that statement
