Just as not indicating "no smoke" does not lead the mind following it to ascertain "no smoke," similarly, when indicating that "a sprout has no inherent existence," even if it is only a distinction regarding the inherent existence of the sprout, what contradiction is there in its words and mind expressing and ascertaining that the sprout has no inherent existence? Therefore, regarding a lake, the very act of verbally distinguishing smoke is expressing "non-existence," and the mind will definitely ascertain that distinguishing smoke is "non-existence." This is because if the distinction of what is to be negated and the complete severance of what is negated are not the same, then one of them will not exist. Similarly, the scriptures that show the absence of inherent existence express that the very negation of inherent existence is the expression of the absence of inherent existence; the reasoning that refutes inherent existence understands that the very negation of inherent existence is the understanding of the absence of inherent existence; and the sign that refutes inherent existence should be considered as establishing that the very negation of inherent existence is the establishment of the absence of inherent existence. One should not say that the scriptures have no object to be expressed, knowledge has no object to be known, and the sign has no object to be established. Therefore, to say that reason only negates inherent existence and does not establish the absence of inherent existence does not seem logical in any Madhyamaka or Pramana system. To say that "earth is not the nature of arising in ultimate reality" only negates that it is the nature of arising in ultimate reality. If one says that it only makes such a negation, then this means that non-affirming negation is what is to be established, so it does not establish that there is no nature of things, which does not mean that it does not establish that there are no things in ultimate reality, but rather that it does not establish the nature of non-things other than negation. Therefore, it is true to ask whether something else is established besides merely severing what is to be negated, but after having promised to distinguish what is to be negated, what is the point of examining whether the negation has been cognized by reason, words, and mind? If the absence of inherent existence is established by reason by distinguishing what exists by inherent existence, then how can one reconcile what the noble one said: "This is the negation of existence itself, not the complete grasping of non-existence. When saying 'not black,' one has not said 'not white'"? For example, if one wants to show only the absence of black, so one says "this is not black," then this is only negating black, and not showing white other than black. Similarly, for things like sprouts, if one says that there is no inherent existence in ultimate reality, then it is also in ultimate reality

It is merely establishing the negation of inherent existence, not establishing the existence of untruth other than that, which is the meaning. The commentary on the Lamp of Wisdom and its annotations also state that it is not a negation of what is not, but a negation of existence. It can also be understood by example, saying that "not black" does not mean that non-black is not shown, but that white is not shown. This quote exists in the Chapter on Worldly Examination, spoken by Avalokiteśvara the Ascetic. The origin of this doubt is: the non-existence of sprout in ultimate truth must be established by reason, and when establishing the non-existence of sprout in ultimate truth, the non-existence of ultimate birth becomes the object to be established, because it can be established by inference, so such doubt arises. Regarding this, the non-existence of inherent existence cannot be established by reason, which will be explained in the commentary on the Root Wisdom. If it is realized that the object to be established is a negation of existence, then it will be understood that only the birth in ultimate truth is negated, and the existence of ultimate non-birth other than that is not established. The Clear Words also say: The existence assumed by others is negated, but non-existence is not established. Negating the assumption of non-existence itself is like not grasping the non-birth in ultimate truth as truly existent. Not establishing existence itself is not establishing the existence of birth in ultimate truth. Therefore, both the true establishment and the true non-establishment of a sprout can be negated, although negating one does not necessarily completely eliminate the other. However, for the true existence and true non-existence of a sprout, if one is negated, the other must be completely eliminated, so both cannot be negated. As stated in the Refutation of Disputes: If by the very nature of non-existence, how is non-existence refuted? If the very nature of non-existence is reversed, then existence itself will be well established. It means that if the word "non-existence" is used to negate the non-existence of phenomena, then the phenomena will become existent, which is clearly stated. The existence and non-existence in ultimate truth are similar to this, so both cannot be negated. But existence in ultimate truth, non-existence in ultimate truth, and existence in ultimate truth can all be negated. Regarding this, the proponents of entities believe that if the object to be negated is not true, then negating it is true; if the negation is not true, then the object to be negated is true.
