A Treatise Differentiating Provisional and Definitive Meanings, The Essence of Eloquence. A Treatise Differentiating Provisional and Definitive Meanings, The Essence of Eloquence. Pages 481 to 500. A Treatise Differentiating Provisional and Definitive Meanings, The Essence of Eloquence, is presented herein. Namo guru mañjughoṣāya(藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思)! Riding on clouds of bliss-arising, in the golden womb, Lord without a body, and those with bellies of rope, etc., Those who loudly proclaim their arrogance in existence, Even those who strut with pride, when they see his form, In an instant, like a torch to the sun, When he acts, with a beautiful diadem, Those who respectfully attend to his lotus feet, I pay homage to the Powerful One, the god of gods. The depths of his wisdom and compassion are extremely difficult to fathom, The great waves of the bodhisattva's conduct surge and swirl, Mañjughoṣa, the treasure of excellent teachings, I respectfully bow to the great Regent Ocean. By excellently distinguishing the two modes of the Sugata's scriptures, the tradition of the chariots, The supreme teaching of the Victorious One, like the sun in the three realms, He illuminates. I bow my head to the feet of Nāgārjuna and Asaṅga. Having well upheld the two great chariot traditions, Opening the eyes of hundreds of thousands of clear-minded beings in Jambudvipa, Āryadeva and the hero Buddhapālita, Bhavaviveka and the feet of Candrakīrti, The feet of Vasubandhu and Sthiramati, Dignāga, and The feet of Dharmakīrti, etc., the ornaments of Jambudvipa, The supreme holders of the undying victory banner of the Buddha's teaching, I respectfully bow to the masters of wisdom. Having heard many scriptures and also diligently applied myself to the path of reasoning, Without weariness, and with the qualities of manifest realization, Even though many who are not inferior in their accumulation of merit, Have strived, they have not realized that state. Having clearly seen it through the kindness of the lama, Jamgön, With a mind of great affection, I will explain it well. Those who desire to understand the truth of the teachings, With discriminating wisdom, listen respectfully to the unparalleled words. As it is said in the Holy King Udayana Sutra: Because they do not know the nature of emptiness, peace, and non-arising, Beings wander in samsara. Out of compassion for them, he leads them with skillful means and Hundreds of reasonings. Thus, the suchness of all phenomena is extremely difficult to realize, And seeing that if it is not realized, one will not be liberated from samsara, the compassionate Teacher uses skillful means.

It is said that it is entered into understanding through various methods and reasons. Therefore, those with discernment should strive to find a way to understand its true meaning, which depends on distinguishing between the definitive and provisional meanings of the Buddha's teachings. Distinguishing between these two cannot be accomplished merely by relying on scriptures that say, "This is provisional meaning, this is definitive meaning." Otherwise, the great chariot masters' writing of commentaries distinguishing between definitive and provisional meanings would become meaningless. Moreover, there are many inconsistencies in the ways definitive and provisional meanings are established in the scriptures. It is not possible to establish it in this way merely by relying on scriptures that say, "This is this," because if it is not universally covered in general, then for the individual definitive and provisional meanings, it cannot be established merely by saying, "This is this." Therefore, in order to distinguish between the definitive and provisional meanings of the scriptures, one should follow the views of the great chariot masters who were prophesied by the Buddha to explain the definitive and provisional meanings, and it must be well determined that the meaning of the definitive scriptures is not led to other places, and that it cannot be explained as provisional meaning, but is established with reasons that can determine its meaning. Ultimately, it must be distinguished by immaculate reasoning. If one accepts a tenet that contradicts reasoning, then the speaker cannot be a reliable person, and the true nature of things must also have reasons to be established by reasoning. In view of this meaning, the Buddha said, "Monks or wise men, like gold that is burned, cut, and polished, should carefully examine my teachings, and not accept them out of respect." Therefore, there are two ways to distinguish between definitive and provisional meanings: relying on the sutra commentaries and relying on the teachings of Inexhaustible Intelligence. The first way has two aspects: quoting what is said in the sutras and how to explain their meaning. The first way has four aspects: asking questions to eliminate contradictions in the sutras, answering to eliminate contradictions, identifying the nature of the three natures, and asking about the meaning established by these natures. The first is what is said in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: The Blessed One, in many different occasions, spoke of the nature of the aggregates.
