All the dharmas of the twelve scriptures are individually declared to be without substance, without self-nature, and without essence. In particular, after mentioning all the names of ultimate truth such as emptiness, the realm of dharma, and suchness, it is declared that these have no self-nature. Therefore, who with a mind would say that among the dharmas in these sutras that declare dharmas to be without self-nature, there is nothing in the ultimate truth? Secondly, if the dharmas that are declared to be without self-nature are summarized into three types of self-naturelessness, then what are these three, and how is it that they are without self-nature? If you think like this, then first explain the absence of self-nature. As it says in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning: 'What is the characteristic of the absence of self-nature of the characteristics of all dharmas? It is the characteristic of complete imputation.' Why is that? Because it is a characteristic that is established by name and convention, but it is not established by its own characteristic. Therefore, it is called the characteristic of no self-nature.' Thus it is said. The first two sentences of the question and answer explain that the characteristic of complete imputation is without self-nature. 'Why is that?' The answer to the question of the reason is that, from the negative side, it is not established by its own characteristic, and from the affirmative side, it is because it is established by name and convention.

Because it is not self-produced, it is said to be the absence of inherent existence of arising. On the other-dependent, there is no arising of the nature or essence of arising from non-existence, because it is said that it is not self-produced, so it is self-produced. That is self-arising, because it is said in the Compendium: 'All phenomena are interdependent, therefore they arise from the power of causes, and what does not arise by itself is called the absence of inherent existence of arising.' Just as it is said. On the other-dependent, because there is no such inherent arising of nature, it is said to be without inherent existence, but it is not the reason for saying that it is without inherent existence because it is not established by its own characteristics. There are two ways of establishing the third absence of inherent existence, among which the establishment of ultimate absence of inherent existence on the other-dependent is stated in the Explanation of Intention Sutra: 'What is the ultimate absence of inherent existence of all phenomena? Whatever phenomena are dependently originated, those that are without inherent existence by the absence of inherent existence of arising are also without inherent existence by the ultimate absence of inherent existence. Why is that? The ultimate is the truth. For all phenomena, whatever is a pure object of observation is fully revealed to be the ultimate. And the nature of the other-dependent is not a pure object of observation, therefore it is called the ultimate absence of inherent existence.' It is said that the other-dependent is not the nature of the ultimate, so it is called the ultimate absence of inherent existence, the ultimate is that if one becomes familiar with it by focusing on it, it will cause the obscurations to be exhausted, but if one becomes familiar with it by focusing on the other-dependent, it will not be able to purify the obscurations. Then, why is the completely imputed not established as the ultimate absence of inherent existence? If it is established merely by not being a pure object of observation, that is also possible, but relative to the elimination of wrong conceptions, because the other-dependent is not a pure object of observation, it is established as the ultimate absence of inherent existence, while the completely imputed is not established. How is it? If it is known that meditating on the emptiness of the other-dependent by the completely imputed will purify the obscurations. In that case, it is also necessary to focus on the nature of the other-dependent, which will also become a pure object of observation, so it will become the ultimate, such doubts will arise, but the completely imputed does not have such doubts.
