It is unreasonable. Because these two teachers, when explaining the ultimate intention of the Holy Father and Son (referring to Maitreya and Asanga), if they cannot find a place to establish self-characteristics, it is because they are accustomed to establishing cause and effect self-characteristics, etc., on the basis of self-establishment. Moreover, since the meaning of dependent origination, which is self-nature emptiness, has not yet dawned, it should be known that this is a major fault of this school. If it is thought that the arising of ultimate truth is not refuted, it is because things are established by their own characteristics in name, and if they are examined and refuted from where self and others arise, and if they cannot be refuted, then it is unreasonable to examine and refute them in the same way in ultimate truth. Therefore, it is also possible to refute the establishment of self-characteristics in name. The key to establishing self-characteristics is that they must be established in ultimate truth. The reasoning that refutes the arising of ultimate truth can also refute the establishment of self-characteristics in name. Therefore, the arising of self-characteristics does not exist in either of the two truths. As it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Where and by what reason is the reason that does not allow arising from self and others, that is, it does not allow arising in name either. By what is your arising established?" Thus it is said. It is unreasonable to say that all dharmas are empty of self-nature, as it is said in the "Explanation of the First Reason": "Good son, moreover, for those who truly distinguish the Middle Way in all dharmas, if emptiness does not make all dharmas empty, the self-nature of all dharmas is empty." Thus it is said. Similarly, if there is no sign, if there is no wish, if there is no manifestation, if there is no birth, if there is no cessation, it does not make all dharmas without signs, and even does not make all dharmas unborn, the self-nature of all dharmas is without signs, and even the self-nature of all dharmas is unborn. It is drawn from what was said in the Light Request, and established by self-characteristic emptiness. This teaching also explains that the emptiness of the Mind-Only school is unreasonable. If all dharmas have a self-nature established by self-characteristics, then these dharmas are from self. If they are not empty, then it is unreasonable that the self-nature of all dharmas is empty. Without refuting existence from one's own side by nature, it is necessary to show emptiness by means of other emptiness, so emptiness makes all dharmas.

It contradicts the statement "does not make it empty," so in short, it means that it is not self-emptiness that is empty by its own nature. Therefore, if one does not want to admit that phenomena are empty of their own nature, which is established by their own characteristics, even if one names it self-emptiness, it will not go beyond other-emptiness. The Vijnanavada school argues that the apprehended and apprehender in other-dependence are not other entities, and if one says that this means that other-dependence is without self-nature, then it is not valid. Because the basis of negation does not exist in the nature of the negated, and the basis is also emptied by negation, so similarly to emptiness, phenomena are empty by being established by their own characteristics, which means being empty by their own nature. The reason why other ways of emptiness are not empty by their own nature is that as long as the former way of emptiness is proven by valid cognition and its function has not diminished, it is impossible for philosophical tenets to give rise to the imputation that the basis is true or exists in its meaning. Even if the meaning of the latter is proven by valid cognition and its function has not diminished, it is not contradictory for philosophical tenets to impute it as true or as the meaning of truth. Third: Then, is it as some say that one only negates self-nature in persons and phenomena by signs, but does not establish it? Or, does one think that the absence of self-nature is established by signs? In this regard, one must first understand the definitions of the two negations, so I will explain them. Negation is something that, when expressed in words, the negated object is cut off by the words, or when its image appears in the mind, it appears directly as having the aspect of negating the negated object and is to be understood. The first is like selflessness. The second is like the nature of phenomena, where although there is no cutting off of the negated object by words, when its meaning appears, it appears as having the aspect of cutting off elaboration. Thus, for the meaning to be understood by actually cutting off the negated object, there are two. Among them, non-affirmative negation is when the negated object is actually cut off and another phenomenon is drawn in. As it says in the Blaze of Reasoning: "Non-affirmative negation is the negation of the very nature of a thing, thereby establishing the nature of another thing that is similar to it but different from it. For example, negating 'this is not a Brahmin,' thereby establishing a low-caste person who is different from a Brahmin and inferior to a Brahmin in asceticism and learning." Cessation negation is when the negated object is actually cut off, but no other phenomenon is drawn in. As it says in the Blaze of Reasoning:
