The difference between not finding existence when searching with intellect and seeing existence when thinking it doesn't exist is very large, and it depends on distinguishing them well. These have already been explained in detail elsewhere. If, before completing a thorough analysis of these, one rejects the existence of ultimate truth based on seemingly correct reasoning, and if one thinks that conventional truth can be established simply by being perceived by erroneous consciousness, and that its meaning is only in the context of error, then the arising of happiness and suffering from Ishvara and the chief, and the arising of good and bad results from black and white actions, would be equally valid or invalid. If analyzed as before, the analyzer would not find the latter, but the former also exists in the context of error. If this is the case, then it would be unreasonable for the *Madhyamakāvatāra* to say, "This is not a valid basis for the ego-grasping, nor is it accepted as conventionally existent." And, "What is the difference between those non-Buddhists who are agitated by the sleep of ignorance and who examine the self as it is, and those who examine illusions, mirages, etc.? These do not exist even in the world." And so on, because the tenets of other schools, both one's own and others', cannot be named in a way that is commonly accepted, and because the objects of illusion, such as horses and cattle in illusions, and the perception of water in mirages, do not exist even conventionally. Because even a deluded mind would not grasp it that way, and because it exists in the context of error, it would exist in name only. And, the arising from self and other, etc., is not established even conventionally, so it cannot be refuted by reason. These delusions are not the self-gratifying delusions of sentient beings that have come down from beginningless time, and one cannot say that there is no fault in establishing as conventional truth only what exists in the context of error that has come down from beginningless time without analysis. If that were the case, then the object of the innate clinging to permanence, which grasps past and future as one, and the clinging to self, which grasps persons and phenomena as established by their own characteristics, would also exist nominally. Therefore, if it exists nominally, although it is contradictory to find existence by searching for it with intellect, it is necessary to determine that there is something that is not harmed by valid cognition of intellect, and it is also necessary to have something that is not harmed by any other conventional valid cognition, because name

Because things that exist in terms of convention need to be established by valid cognition. If so, then all things that exist in terms of convention are merely established by the power of nominal convention, which is contradictory. If you think so, there is no fault, because the word "merely" in "like a person, which exists conventionally, is merely established by the power of nominal convention" cuts off the person who is not established by the power of nominal convention, but it does not cut off the person who is established by valid cognition. Moreover, it does not show that everything established by the power of nominal convention exists conventionally. So, what kind of thing that is not established by the power of nominal convention would be cut off? If the meaning expressed by the term "person" is established by its own characteristic, then the meaning will exist by its own nature, not by the power of the object-possessing term, so it is cut off. Like this, although it is refuted by reason, if the term "can be seen by sacrifice" has no meaning, then it will be harmed by the conventional valid cognition and will be established as existing. Among the two, meaning and term, if the meaning does not exist by its own nature, then it is impossible to exist by the power of the term, so it will be established. Therefore, if we examine how the ultimate truth exists, it is only the same as this, so we say that its existence is also established by the power of convention, but we do not say that the ultimate truth is established by conventional valid cognition. Saying that the existence of the ultimate truth is placed in front of the conventional consciousness is also because the way of holding the ultimate truth does not exist in the holding of reason, not because it is established by it. Buddhapalita also said that the Victorious Ones taught birth and so on by the power of convention, and said that birth and so on are established only in expression. The Svātantrikas believe that the harmless consciousness that establishes existence in terms of convention is a consciousness that is not mistaken about the meaning that the appearing object or the object of clinging is established by its own characteristic. For this school, because of being mistaken about the appearing object, there are many consciousnesses that can establish meaning, so the difference between the existence and non-existence of harm to the harmless consciousness of these two schools is also very large. Like this, things that exist by the power of convention are called imputed existence, but it is not the case that the thing is not real, but is imputed there, so for this school, everything such as Buddha and sentient beings, essentialists and liberation-bound essentialists are all reasonable, but in other schools it is completely unreasonable.
