Considering whether to establish the absence of inherent existence. Firstly, if this school is to refute the establishment of all phenomena in ultimate truth, then what is the main reasoning it relies on? As stated in the "Entering the Middle Way" (Madhyamakāvatāra): "Because of attachment to examining and debating the scriptures, the path to liberation was not created; therefore, that treatise was taught for the sake of liberation." As it is said, all the reasoning and analysis spoken of in the Madhyamaka treatises are solely for the purpose of sentient beings attaining liberation. Sentient beings are bound in samsara precisely because of their manifest clinging to the self of persons and the self of phenomena. Among these, the object towards which the thought of "I" arises, namely the person and the phenomena of their continuum, manifest clinging to these two as the two selves, which is the main factor of bondage. Therefore, the main basis for the reasoning to refute the clinging to self is also these two. Therefore, the reasonings also converge on refuting the two selves. In the "Entering the Middle Way," it is said that the reasonings spoken to establish suchness are summarized in the commentary as establishing the two selflessnesses. When refuting the four extremes of arising, the reasonings are said to show the selflessness of phenomena. As stated in the "Sutra of the Ten Bhumis," entering the sixth bhumi through the ten equalities, all phenomena are shown by reasoning alone to be equal in their unborn nature. Because the teacher thought it would be easier to show the equality of phenomena, he first said, "Not from self, not from other," and so on. Therefore, the main reasoning for establishing the selflessness of phenomena is the reasoning that refutes the four extremes of arising. This is also what is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Since things do not arise from a cause, from Ishvara, from self, from other, or from both, therefore they arise dependently. Since things arise dependently, these conceptions cannot be examined. Therefore, this reasoning of dependent arising cuts through all nets of evil views." As it is said, external things like sprouts and internal things like formations arise in dependence on causes and conditions such as seeds and ignorance. Merely by these, they are empty of inherent existence established by their own characteristics such as arising, and by refuting arising from both self and other and from no cause, thereby cutting through all nets of evil views.

So, rely on the king of reasoning—the reasoning of dependent origination—to refute. The main content of the reasoning that refutes the self of a person comes from the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds: "It is not the same as this, nor is it different, it does not depend on this, it is not formed by that, it does not have this, that does not have it, nor is it based on that." It means that, like a chariot, by searching for whether the chariot and its components are one or other, whether they possess, whether they are interdependent in these two ways, and whether it is merely an assembly or the shape of an assembly in these seven ways, the chariot cannot be found. However, just as the chariot is established as nominally existent by relying on its components, so too is a person established. Therefore, it is considered a method for easily obtaining profound insight, so it should be known that these reasonings are the main reasoning for refuting the self of a person. As the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds says: "Since it cannot be found by searching in seven ways, how can a yogi not see existence in this? Because it is easy to enter into that true nature through this, therefore one should diligently observe such reasoning of emptiness." It means that, first, if one searches for a person in seven ways and cannot find it, and establishes it by relying on one's own aggregates, this is easy to understand, so the order of guidance is also the same. This is also established by relying on the aggregates, so the person cannot be found in those seven ways, which is the meaning of the selflessness of a person, so ultimately it is the reasoning of dependent origination. In this way, relying on arising and relying on establishment as reasons, to refute the four such as self-arising, and the seven such as self-nature being one or different, to refute phenomena and persons, one should grasp the main points of these reasonings. Second, then, do these reasons of dependent origination also refute the conventionally true that is established by its own characteristics? If this tenet considers this to be a special characteristic of explaining the intention of the noble ones, then how should a special refutation be made? This is very important, so it will be explained. In response to this, the root verses of the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds refute with three reasons, and the commentary refutes with one reason, for a total of four reasons. Among them, the first is the fault of the noble one's meditative equipoise becoming the cause of the destruction of things: If things had a self-nature established by their own characteristics, then when a yogi directly realizes that all phenomena are without self-nature, that wisdom must apprehend forms, feelings, etc., but in reality it does not apprehend them, so
