In the Ornament of Precious Garland, it says, "Because it is not established in reality, therefore, the speaker and the spoken, seeing the fault of various unmixed things, and because of uncertainty, it is not established." Thus, the latter two of the three types of reasoning prevent establishment in reality. Then, if that is the case, from the word "form" to the word "Buddha," no matter which object is grasped and names and terms are applied, will it not only become clinging to the nature of form, etc.? This is the question: Because there is an object that is the basis for applying names, is it not that form, etc., have a self-established nature? The answer is, is the meaning of applying names and terms to form, etc., the nature of form, etc., or is it merely imputation? The answer is, it is merely imputation. When asked if it is merely imputation, the Blessed One said, "Then how is it that you think like the previous question?" This shows that even though there is no self-characterized nature, there is an object that is the basis for names, and it is not contradictory that it is said to be merely named. Then, if form, etc., are merely names and terms, will the nature of form, etc., be apprehended? This is the question, previously, if it is merely imputation, will the nature not be apprehended? This shows that the two are contradictory. The answer is, merely speaking of imputation also requires admitting the basis of imputation and the imputator, and if so, there must be the nature of form, etc., so it is not contradictory. The answer is, does that which is merely named have arising and ceasing and accumulation and purification? When it was answered that it does not, the Blessed One said, "Then, if it is merely imputation, will it not become having a nature? How is it proper to ask such a question?" Then, as previously explained, the answer to the question, "Are form, etc., non-existent in all aspects?" is that the negation of nature, arising and ceasing, and accumulation and purification is in ultimate reality. In conventional reality, it is shown that form, etc., exist, so merely naming is also in conventional reality, how can it be in accordance with the interpretative thought and the way of explanation? The teachers also think that this chapter does not explain the Mother Sutra as definitive meaning, and the reason for explaining it with interpretative thought is also that this chapter also shows that all phenomena do not exist in ultimate reality, but only in conventional reality, so it seems that it cannot be taken literally.

To hold that other-powered is substantially existent is not contradictory. First, it is necessary to understand how the three characteristics are taught in that sutra, so I will explain. In that very sutra, it says: Maitreya, whatever is the object of the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, relying on the name called "form" and the concept, imputation, and terminology, completely apprehending it as the nature of form, this is the thoroughly imputed form, up to these are all the thoroughly imputed Buddha-dharmas. Thus, the thoroughly imputed is identified. "Relying on" means focusing on the meaning of the name, that is, focusing on form. "Apprehending it as the nature of form" means that this is not apprehension, but it shows that the nature of what is apprehended is the thoroughly imputed. The dependently imputed is also in that very sutra: That object of the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, relying on the discrimination that abides in the nature of mere discrimination, is manifestly expressed, that is, whatever name, concept, imputation, and terminology there is, from what is called "this is form" to what is called "feeling," "perception," "formations," and "consciousness," up to what is called "Buddha-dharmas," this is the dependently imputed form, up to these are all the dependently imputed Buddha-dharmas. Thus, the dependently imputed is identified. There, "that object" means the object to be expressed. The way of expressing it by relying on discrimination is "called form," and so on. Thus, since the name, etc., of expression are explained as dependently imputed, it should be understood that the object to be expressed and the discrimination previously shown are also explained as dependently imputed, so it is understood that there are two: the dependently imputed and the basis on which it is dependently imputed. The nature of reality is also in that very sutra: Whatever thoroughly imputed form, with the dependently imputed form, is only without intrinsic nature in the time of permanence and in the time of steadfastness, and the selflessness of phenomena, and suchness, and the ultimate limit, this is the form of the nature of reality, up to these are all the Buddha-dharmas of the nature of reality. Thus, the nature of reality is identified. There, the lack of intrinsic nature of the dependently imputed form and the selflessness of phenomena, etc., are the form of the nature of reality. That phenomenon is also the dependently imputed form, the thoroughly imputed form, with its nature.
