Having said that, when asked, "Then how does it exist?" the answer is, "It exists by the conventions and terms of the world, but not in ultimate reality." If it is said that everything from form to Buddha is equally non-existent in ultimate reality and equally existent in convention, that would be unreasonable. Therefore, to say that this chapter, through the sutra of the land, has previously explained the intention that all dharmas are non-existent in ultimate reality and existent in convention, and has explained it as requiring interpretation, is an unreasonable statement. Therefore, the dharmas that are designated by names are artificial constructs that are established as existing by the power of convention. Therefore, it is not merely established as existing by the power of convention; for the generality without a basis for the application of names, it is not that there is no object that is the basis for the application of names. Therefore, it exists, and what is said is not contradictory, that it is merely established as a name. In this regard, without the name called "form," one would not think, "This is form," by the power of seeing the object of form, because it arises by the power of the name. Therefore, the term "form" is said to be a name that is suddenly applied. When asked, "How is that reasonable?" the answer is: If form is established by the power of convention, then even at the time when its name has not been applied, it exists as established by the power of convention. Therefore, it is reasonable that the thought, "This is form," arises. Then, when Maitreya himself was asked, "Without relying on a name, does the thought, 'This is form,' arise for an object?" and he replied, "It does not arise," then for that very reason, it was declared that form and so forth are names that are suddenly applied. This shows that this reason is the proof that form and so forth are established by the power of convention, and not the proof that is the opposite of that, namely, if form and so forth were established by their own characteristics, then the thought, "This is form," arising for them would have to arise without depending on the application of a name, just as, for example, if a sprout were established by its own characteristics, it would grow without depending on a seed. Because of the reason that there are many similar names for one object and one name applies to many meanings, it is also said that the designation as form and so forth is sudden. If form and so forth were not sudden, established by the power of convention, then the terms of names would all have to apply by the power of their own characteristics, and if that were the case, then those would all be unreasonable. Because these reasons have been established, there is absolutely no need to establish them in the manner of the Compendium of Determinations, because...
