Therefore, because the definitive meaning is accepted as the provisional meaning, and the provisional meaning is established as the definitive meaning, this sutra speaks of two things. One of them is that, at this time, what is quoted from the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra is that the Tathāgatagarbha of provisional meaning and no self-nature are included in all the sutras. Preventing other authors is, in the Daśabhūmika Sūtra, it says, "It is only mind." The word "only" here is said to be the knower that does not prevent external objects, but it is not the knower that shows the prevention of external objects as provisional meaning. Sutras of that kind are as explained in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra before, but it is not said that the Vijñānavāda school considers the sutra that shows the Tathāgatagarbha as provisional meaning to be definitive meaning, because in that respect, there is no dispute between the two. The self-system is that the quoted Tathāgatagarbha, which is said to be of provisional meaning, proves that the Ālayavijñāna mentioned in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra is not literal. In this regard, it must first be known that the mentioned Tathāgatagarbha is not literal. As the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: The sutras are spoken according to the thoughts of sentient beings, and the meaning is wrong, not the only talk. For example, like a mirage, because there is no water, it deceives animals that are attached to water. The Dharma that is spoken also only makes children happy, but it is not a discussion that establishes the wisdom of the noble ones. Therefore, you should follow the meaning and not be attached to words. And, Mahāmati asked: The Tathāgatagarbha mentioned by the Blessed One in the sutras is self-luminous, completely pure from the beginning, has thirty-two marks, and exists in the bodies of all sentient beings. Just like a precious jewel is wrapped in a cloth stained with dirt, it is wrapped in the cloth of the aggregates, elements, and sources, and is stained. If it is said to be permanent, stable, and solid, then how is saying Tathāgatagarbha different from the self-theorists of the heretics? The heretics also say that the self is permanent, without an author, without merit, pervasive, and indestructible. In response to this, the Buddhas replied: In order to make the children who are afraid of no-self abandon their fear, and in order to guide those who are attached to the self-theorists of the heretics, therefore, the meaning of words such as emptiness, no-sign, and no-wish, that is, the object of no-pudgala-self and no reality, is shown as the Tathāgatagarbha, therefore it is different from the self-theorists of the heretics.

Therefore, present and future Bodhisattvas should not cling to the notion of self. Those who are prone to views of self, if it is wished that they abide in the realm of the three liberations, possess mindfulness, and quickly attain Buddhahood, then for that purpose, the essence is taught. In order to refute the views of the tirthikas, one should follow the essence of no-self. Having said this, it was not elaborated further for fear of prolixity. Therefore, his intention is directed towards the emptiness of the no-self of phenomena, and the purpose is to dispel fear of no-self, and to gradually guide those who cling to self-views towards no-self. By this sign, it is established that the teaching of the essence and the teaching of self are not the same. If this is done, then what those who teach self-views think and say is what they believe. But the intention of what the Buddha thought and said is very different from the literal meaning. Those who teach self-views, teaching the self as permanent, etc., do so in order to solidify the certainty of the literal meaning at all times. But what the Buddha taught was to temporarily show that the literal meaning exists, and then to guide them towards the meaning that he thought and spoke. Therefore, these two are not the same, and it is necessary to distinguish their similarities. If one clings to the literal meaning of the essence as before, then it is clearly shown to be the same as those who teach self-views, and that is also a harm to reality. It is not permissible to cling to the literal meaning, just as before, combining the example and meaning of maturation, one should not cling to the expressions that should follow the meaning, and so on, which is very clear. Therefore, through showing the intention, purpose, and harm to the literal meaning of what is taught in other sutras, this sutra establishes whether or not it is to be established as provisional; who is wise would argue? However, if one does not like to explain it as explained here, then one should point out the harm to the literal meaning of this sutra in terms of reasoning. Because explaining this sutra as provisional is the instruction of Indian scholars, so it should be done. If the previous sutras did not show it in this way, then it is merely revealing one's own reality. The *Compendium of Sutras* also says: The Tathagata, in order to tame, shows various paths of the vehicle, so the nature of reality is profound.
