It is said that liberation from samsara requires abandoning the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Therefore, in the Mahayana, it is said that the selflessness of phenomena is the negation of the substantial otherness of the grasper and the grasped, and that self-nature is not negated for the wisdom of the two truths. And because it is said that there are two kinds of selflessness of phenomena, subtle and coarse, in which self-nature is negated, just as they are regarded as not definitive. Similarly, in the Hinayana Vinaya Pitaka, it is said that there are two kinds of selflessness of persons, subtle and coarse, and the subtle selflessness should be regarded as definitive, because all the reasons are the same. If this is done, the way of establishing self-grasping as two obscurations will also be different, because the self-grasping of phenomena, which other Madhyamikas consider to be the obscuration of knowledge, is considered by this system to be the obscuration of afflictions. Thus, Buddhapalita, seeing beings afflicted by various sufferings, thought that the true suchness of things should be taught in order to liberate them, and therefore composed the Root Verses. And the meaning of truth is also without self-nature, because the darkness of ignorance obscures the eye of wisdom. When one thinks that things have self-nature, attachment and aversion arise; and the appearance of knowing dependent origination dispels the darkness of ignorance, and when one sees that things have no self-nature, attachment and aversion do not arise for things that have no substance. As proof of these, it is quoted in the Hundred Treatises: 'The seed of existence is consciousness, objects are its field of activity, if one sees no self in objects, the seed of existence will cease.' Therefore, ignorance, one of the two, attachment and aversion, is said to be the clinging to the truth of things and the seed of existence, and in order to stop it, one must see selflessness, and this is also said to be seeing that things have no self-nature. Therefore, it is believed that the grasping of the reality of persons and phenomena is itself the ignorance of affliction. In the commentary on the Hundred Treatises, it is also said: 'Consciousness further imputes the self-nature of things, and due to the ignorance of affliction, it is attached to things and becomes the seed of entering samsara, which is stopped in every way, and thus it is established that samsara is stopped.' And in the Commentary on Entering the Middle Way, it is also said: 'Ignorance imputes the self-nature that things do not have, and is the nature that obscures seeing self-nature.'

Now, this is the conventional truth. Thus, under the influence of the afflictive ignorance that is fully encompassed by the limbs of existence, the conventional truth is established. As such, the very clinging to true entities is the afflictive ignorance, which is clearly explained as the first of the twelve limbs. This innate ignorance has two types of self-grasping, of persons and of phenomena. Therefore, the innate self-grasping of persons is also afflictive ignorance. Therefore, sometimes ignorance is said to be the root of samsara, and sometimes innate view of the perishable is said to be the root, and this is not contradictory. The object of the innate self-grasping of "I" is the basis for grasping as "I." Therefore, grasping another person's continuum as being established by its own nature is the self-grasping of persons, but it is not the view of the perishable. This approach is the noble view of the Holy Father and Sons, as it is said in the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness": "Whatever truly realizes things born from causes and conditions, that is what the Teacher called ignorance, from which the twelve limbs arise." Thus, it is said that from knowing that things are empty of their own nature, ignorance ceases, and from that, the twelve limbs also cease. Because similar types of ignorance arise from the previous one to the next, it is said to be twelve limbs. It is also said in the "Hundred Verses": "Just as the body has power over the body, delusion changes and abides in all. Therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying delusion. If dependent arising is seen, delusion will not arise. Therefore, with all effort, only that word should be spoken here." Thus, in order to reverse ignorance, which is one of the three poisons, it is necessary to see dependent arising, and in this system, it has been said many times that the meaning of dependent arising is emptiness of own nature. Therefore, all Madhyamaka reasonings are branches for refuting the way of grasping of ignorance, which is the root of samsara. One should recognize how the innate ignorance in one's own continuum grasps, and strive to eliminate it. One should not be pleased with scholars who only speak of tenets and debate. So, how is it that there are not two different ways of grasping the innate self-grasping of phenomena and persons, as explained by the Svatantrikas? In response, aggregates and characteristics do not
