Seeing that dharmas such as the eye cannot be established as a person, they therefore accept a person who is a seer of other entities apart from these. Other schools, seeing harm to other entities, therefore consider consciousness or other aggregates of dharmas to be a person. Those who understand the Buddha's teachings without distortion, as stated in the commentary on the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, are liberated by realizing that there is no essence other than mere designation. Therefore, one must be skilled in establishing that mere designation itself, being able to accumulate karma and experience its fruits, etc. Therefore, the meaning of the selflessness of the person, such as "How to the aggregates of limbs," etc., is as established in the root commentary of the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds. Seeking the meaning of the term "person" in seven ways, because it is considered to be without a nature that is not found, it is very different from what others say. This seems to be the actual intention of Buddhapālita's commentary. The second part has three points: the common and uncommon differences of realizing selflessness and subtle and gross self-grasping, etc.; the common and uncommon differences of establishing external objects and not accepting the ālaya-vijñāna and self-awareness; and the common and uncommon differences of not accepting svatantra. The first point is: Thus, when seeking the meaning of the terms "self" and "dharmas," one cannot find even a little of one and different, etc. However, it is necessary to ascertain the terms "offering" and "eye," etc., so there is no essence that is not established by the power of designation, and for what is established as existing by the power of designation, all aspects of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are very reasonable. This aspect of the two truths is the explanation of the intention of the noble father and son by Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti, and is a supreme characteristic that surpasses other commentaries. Existence and birth, etc., in name, as stated in the Collection of Righteous Dharmas, are established in this way due to the power of designation. Son of good family, those who abide in the world are attached to birth and death, therefore, the Tathāgata, the great compassionate one, in order to completely abandon the place of fear of the world, said that birth and death occur due to the power of designation. Son of good family, there is no dharma that is born here. In the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it also says: Abiding or

Birth Is there birth and destruction? Is it inferior, equal, or superior? The Buddha speaks according to worldly conventions, not according to the true meaning. As stated in the Sutra of the Realm and others, it exists in worldly conventions. Thus, Madhyamikas should establish it according to conventions, and worldly conventions, although there are establishments such as sprouts arising from seeds, do not seek the meaning of the convention, nor do they establish it by examining whether it arises from self or from other. The noble ones also speak in the same way, so the meaning of worldly conventions that have not been examined seems to be established in the same way as the method of establishing persons previously described. It is absolutely impossible to establish a person as something different from the aggregates or as merely a collection of aggregates as the meaning of worldly conventions. Because in the world, self and what belongs to self are established like master and servant. The way that persons and dharmas do or do not exist in ultimate reality should be like that, and the two selflessnesses should also be explained in that way. At that time, if some schools accept that the self of dharmas exists, then there is no way to realize the selflessness of persons, so the commentary on the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds also says: "If you do not abandon the attachment to dharmas as self, you will not realize the selflessness of persons." Therefore, Hearers and Solitary Realizers must also realize the two selflessnesses. This is the excellent teaching of the noble ones. As the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning says: "By existence, one is not liberated; by non-existence, one is not from this existence. By fully knowing existence and non-existence, the great being is liberated." Thus, as long as one does not abandon the view of existence that clings to dharmas as existing by their own characteristics, and the view of non-existence that sees that cause and effect are not reasonable, one is not liberated. Knowing the reality of things and non-things, being free from the two extremes, one is liberated. Liberation cannot be directly understood as liberation from the obscurations of knowledge, because the sutra says "from this existence." As the Precious Garland also says: "Likewise, in this illusory world, to say it exists or does not exist, to hold onto that is foolishness; if there is foolishness, one is not liberated. Those who say it exists go to the happy realms; those who say it does not exist go to the bad realms. Because of fully knowing as it is, one does not rely on the two extremes and becomes liberated." Thus, in samsara
