This is said to illustrate the impossibility of abandoning afflictions: For those who possess a place and a mind, why would great afflictive poisons not arise? Even dwelling in the midst of a latrine, one will be seized by the serpent of afflictions. Here, "place" refers to that which is established by its own characteristic, the object that gives rise to the clinging to reality. Regarding how others establish a person as nominally existent, it is said in the Vinaya Pitaka of the Hearers: Just as, relying on the collection of limbs, it is called a chariot. Likewise, relying on the aggregates, it is called a conventional sentient being. But this is not the meaning, just as the chariot established in dependence on the limbs is not the limbs, so too the person designated in dependence on the aggregates is not the aggregates. If one thinks that just as the chariot designated in dependence on the collection of limbs is the collection itself, so too are the aggregates, then that which is designated in dependence on it must be considered not to be the basis of designation, just as blue and eyes, etc., are designated having the elements as their cause. Pots and so forth are also similar to the self, so there is no uncertainty about them. The Madhyamakavatara also says: The sutra says that the aggregates are the basis, therefore the mere collection of aggregates is not the self. If the sutra says: What do ascetics and brahmins regard as the self? They only look at these five aggregates. If it is said that the aggregates are the object of the view of self, then do they think that these are the self? This is not to show that the aggregates are the object of the view of self in a way that establishes it, but rather it is to negate with the word that only the object of the view of self exists apart from the aggregates. For in other sutras, it is negated that each aggregate is the self with "form is not the self," etc. The Madhyamakavatara says: Because the Teacher said that the aggregates are the self, if one therefore thinks that the aggregates are the self, then this is to negate the self other than the aggregates, because other sutras have said "form is not the self," etc. From this, one should also understand the meaning of the word "view of the transitory collection." These are to identify that the object of the innate self-grasp, which has two aspects, object and mode, is nominally existent. The object of the mode is the apprehension that the self exists by its own nature, therefore the self is established by its own characteristic. This is...

There is also no name. The object of the innate view of self that I grasp is mine. The aspect is grasping that mine is established by its own nature. If the aggregates are not suitable as the object of the innate grasping of self, then the sutra says: Form, etc., are not self. It is not reasonable to refute this, because these cannot serve as the object or basis of the innate view of self that grasps at self. If you say that grasping the aggregates and the self as one and different is both a conceptual grasping and not innate, so there is no fault. However, if it exists as grasped by the innate view of self, it will not go beyond one and different, so it is also reasonable to refute it after examining it in that way. These show that there is proof of scripture and no harm. The reason is that the aggregates are the object of my appropriation, and the self is the appropriator, so consciousness or any other aggregate cannot reasonably be the self, otherwise the agent and the action would become one. This is the intention of the noble ones. The Root Wisdom says: If the wood is the fire, the agent and the action will become one. It also says: Fire and wood, with the order of self and appropriation, pots, cloths, etc., together, are all explained in detail. Therefore, it is said. Furthermore, the Root Wisdom says: Likewise, know the appropriation. Just as the two, action and agent, are established in dependence on each other, but are not established by their own nature, so too the object of appropriation and the appropriator are established in this way. For example, relying on the eye seeing form, it is possible to establish well that the offering-maker sees, and relying on the offering-maker seeing form, it is possible to establish well that his eye sees form. However, it is not contradictory that the eye that sees form is not the offering-maker, and the offering-maker who sees form is not the eye. Similarly, just as when the eye hurts or has a cataract, one can establish it by saying that I hurt or have a cataract, one can also establish it by saying that my eye hurts or has a cataract, but the eye itself is neither the self nor mine, it is not established by worldly convention. In this way, the remaining inner and outer sources and the self, the two, should also be known to establish one as the hearer, etc., in dependence on the other. To this, the outsiders
