It is the self-grasping of phenomena, and through it, one should also understand the two selves. Although this grasping is not done by examining the meaning of terms, if there is a meaning as it is grasped, then when examining how the basis upon which that term is applied exists, the examiner must be able to find it. Therefore, the innate self-grasping that has not been examined, along with its object, is the main object to be refuted by reasoning. And it is not contradictory that all the instances in the scriptures of refuting through examination also occur, so do not assume that only the imputed grasping with its object is refuted. Some who have not been transformed by sectarian views, and sentient beings who do not understand language, although they cannot use names that are not established by the power of the mind that applies terms, their meaning exists, otherwise, the meaning of grasping at the two selves would also cease to exist. The Yogācāras and Svātantrika-Madhyamikas consider that the two selves that are established as selflessness by refuting something on the aggregates and phenomena, and the ways of clinging to them, are only different in meaning. However, this system distinguishes the two selflessnesses from the perspective of the basis of the subject, and does not accept differences in the self to be refuted. As it says in the Entering [the Middle Way], "This selflessness is for the sake of liberating beings, it is taught as two by distinguishing phenomena and persons." That is, it is distinguished by the difference between phenomena and persons, and it is not said to be distinguished from the perspective of the two selves. And in the commentary on the Four Hundred, it also says, "That which is called self is the nature of things that does not depend on others, that is, the independent nature, and its absence is selflessness. It is understood as two distinctions of phenomena and persons, that is, the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons." The nature of not depending is not merely established by name, but from the perspective of meaning, there is a way of abiding, that is, the independent nature. If one's own school, that is, from the Vaibhāṣikas up to the Svātantrika-Madhyamikas, believes that the meaning established by valid cognition exists as such a self-characterized entity, then, previously, the Yogācāras considered that the nature and differences of forms and so on are imputed, and although they believed in their existence, they refuted their self-characterized existence, and said that they were established by name and convention, wouldn't this be contradictory? There is no fault, because they can be established by name and convention, so it is said that they are not self-characterized,

If one searches for the basis upon which a name is established and cannot find it, because they do not wish for this, they hold that what this school says is established by its own characteristics. In those treatises of the schools, the establishment of essence and difference as mere names is also because they consider that the two, in the consciousness in which they appear, are merely established for things that have no meaning, just as they appear as a distant severance of grasping and being grasped, so it is different from the mere establishment of names in this school. Secondly, the Yogācāra and Svātantrika-Madhyamaka schools believe that the Hīnayāna scriptures do not teach the selflessness of phenomena, and that the teaching of the selflessness of persons is established by the Śrāvakavāda school, and that there is nothing more excellent to be taught in the Mahāyāna. However, the views of the two teachers are the opposite of this. First, the way in which the selflessness of phenomena is taught in the Hīnayāna scriptures is as follows: Buddhapālita says, "The Blessed One has shown that all conditioned things are selfless by examples such as illusion, mirage, reflection, gandharva cities, dreams, bubbles, water foam, and plantain trees. There is no suchness or non-erroneous suchness in these, but these are also elaborations, these are also false." It is also said, "All dharmas are selfless," and the term "selfless" means without intrinsic existence, because the sound of "self" is the word for intrinsic existence. He said that the five aggregates are shown to be selfless by the examples of foam, bubbles, plantain trees, mirages, and illusions respectively, and said, "These are false." The Hīnayāna scriptures say that all dharmas are selfless, thus teaching that all dharmas are without intrinsic existence, because the meaning of self is the meaning of intrinsic existence. In the commentary on the Entering the Middle Way, it also quotes the sutras taught to the Śrāvakas, such as "Form is like a mass of foam," etc., to explain that the selflessness of phenomena is taught. In the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning, it also says, "The refutation of the view of non-existence is clear to the Śrāvakavāda school, so that reasoning is not explained. The refutation of the view of existence is that the ultimate truth is one, namely, nirvāṇa, which is a dharma that does not deceive this world. All conditioned things are false and have the nature of deception," and so on. Although it has been said many times, there is no interval.
