They were not spoken by putting the two together in one teaching, so it is said that the reason for this will be explained. In this regard, Lekden argues that although those examples show the self of a person, they show the absence of self, and the absence of self of a person is not necessarily the absence of self of phenomena. The meaning of the word "self" is also not the nature of phenomena, but the self of a person. If the absence of self of phenomena is taught in the Hearer Vehicle, then the Great Vehicle would become meaningless, and this was refuted. In the Commentary on Entering, the Great Vehicle does not only show the absence of self in phenomena, but also shows the grounds, perfections, aspirations, and the two accumulations, so it does not become meaningless, and this was proven with the knowledge of the Precious Garland. The teacher also thinks that in the Root Wisdom Treatise it says: The Blessed One knows existence and non-existence, and through the instruction of Katyayana, he negated both existence and non-existence. It also says: The Blessed One said that any dharma that deceives is false. All conditioned things are deceptive dharmas, therefore they are false. And so on, Chandrakirti proved this. In the Sixty Stanza Reasoning it also says: When did the Victorious Ones say that Nirvana is the only truth? At that time, who would think that what remains is not wrong? It is said like this. By pointing out the harm of interpreting the meaning of false as something other than emptiness of inherent existence, the meaning was determined in the Root Wisdom Treatise. Therefore, the absence of self of phenomena is also taught in the Hearer Vehicle's collection, and this should be regarded as the definite intention of the Noble Ones. Even so, it is not asserted that the Hearer Vehicle's collection does not say that phenomena have a self-established nature, because there are many occasions when it is said like that. The absence of self of a person, according to the views of the proponents of the tenets of the Great and Small Vehicles of our own school and other schools, is merely that a person is not an independent entity that is different in characteristics from the aggregates. The way of this is that the self, which is the basis of grasping "I", is regarded as the lord of the aggregates, and the aggregates are regarded as his servants. Grasping "my form", "my feeling", and so on, therefore thinking that the aggregates belong to that self, because I grasp at possessing them. Therefore, like a lord and servant, the aggregates and the nature of the self are different, appearing as independent, and thinking that they exist in that way.

That is, clinging to existence as real. When that is refuted, the person becomes merely a designation on the aggregates, and that alone cuts off the existence of something other than the aggregates. The way of designation is as stated in Blaze of Reasoning: 'Thus, we also nominally apply the term "I" directly to consciousness. Thus, consciousness is "I" because it takes rebirth, and it is close to the collection of body and senses.' Thus, it is quoted that just as a chariot is designated based on the collection of parts, sentient beings are designated based on the aggregates. Also, some sutras say that happiness is attained by taming the mind, and some say that higher realms are attained by taming the self, so the scriptures explain that the mind is established as the self. The one who takes the aggregates is the self, and because consciousness takes rebirth, consciousness is established as the self, thus reasoning is stated. This teacher does not accept the alaya-consciousness, so he says that the consciousness that takes the body is the consciousness, because he does not accept the alaya-consciousness, others are similar to this. Those who accept the alaya-consciousness consider the continuum of the alaya-consciousness itself to be the person. The scriptures that those people consider to be the self of the person are not written because of fear of being too numerous. According to Chandrakirti's view, although such a substantially existent person is refuted, the person is not merely a nominal designation, and being established by its own nature is not refuted, and clinging to its existence is the true clinging to the person, which is the self-grasping of the person, just like the self-grasping of phenomena. Furthermore, the independently existing self is the object of clinging of the internal agent, the purusha, fabricated by the outsiders as something other than the aggregates. Even if one directly realizes that this self does not exist and has become accustomed to it, the habit of clinging to forms etc. as real remains undiminished, so it is explained that there is no point in abandoning the afflictions such as attachment that arise from clinging to the aggregates as real. The Entering the Middle Way says: 'Your yoga seeing selflessness, does not realize the suchness of forms etc., because attachment etc. arise because of focusing on forms, because the nature of that is not realized.' And the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning also says: 'For those who want to abandon afflictions even though they focus on the nature of forms etc.'
