From scriptures such as the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, the Lankavatara Sutra, and the Ratnakuta Sutra, in some instances where external objects are refuted and the Yogacara doctrine is established, the self-nature of the mind is not refuted. This is because it is taught in accordance with the thinking of those who cannot realize the absence of self-nature in all phenomena all at once, but need to be guided gradually. Therefore, those sutras contain both teachings for sentient beings who can realize the absence of self-nature in all phenomena all at once, and the two aforementioned situations. Thus, they should be distinguished and established as the essential meaning of the sutras. Although the translated works of Master Shantarakshita do not explicitly establish the three natures as previously explained, the views of both masters are the same. The meaning of the three natures as explained in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, as I, a follower of Yogacara, have explained, is not the essential meaning of the sutra, but rather this tradition of explaining it as the meaning of Madhyamaka was initiated by Lekdenjé (Śilabhadra). The details are explained in the Madhyamaka Aloka. If one understands the methods of interpreting sutras and commentaries in these two ways in detail, one will understand the logical variations of the great chariot masters and the various methods of interpreting the scriptures. The fourth part has two aspects: identifying the object to be refuted by reasoning, and how to refute it. The first is: If you only accept that phenomena have their own characteristic nature as a mere convention, then what do you think is the object of refutation that is said to be truly, correctly, and ultimately established, which is more than just that? Here, without clearly understanding the general object of refutation, such as the way of clinging to things as truly established, or the object clung to by it, merely relying on the conventional understanding that "it is impossible to establish those things," even if one says a lot about "if it were established in that way, there would be these faults, and these are the reasons why it is not established," the meaning cannot be well understood. Therefore, it is very important to identify the object of refutation. For example, in the commentary on "earth and so on are not the nature of arising in ultimate truth," the Trikaya-ibharava says: "'Meaning' (artha) refers to what needs to be understood, therefore 'meaning' is a synonym for what needs to be examined and understood. 'Supreme' (dama) is the sound of the word 'excellent'. The combination 'ultimate meaning' (paramartha) is that it is both meaning and excellent, so it is ultimate meaning. Or it is the excellent meaning, that is, the excellent non-conceptual wisdom.

Therefore, it is the meaning of "supreme." Or, it is in accordance with the ultimate meaning, that is, the wisdom that realizes the ultimate meaning and follows it, because it possesses the ultimate meaning, it is in accordance with the ultimate meaning. Among the three things mentioned, the latter is the meaning of the context, as it is said in the Blaze of Reasoning: "The ultimate meaning is of two kinds. One is the transcendental, uncontaminated, and non-elaborate that enters without manifest activity. The second is the mundane wisdom that enters with manifest activity, in accordance with the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and is pure, that is, with elaboration. Here, it is held as the distinction of what is vowed, so there is no fault." It is said that the reasoning consciousness that examines the ultimate meaning must also be accepted there, and not only the reasoning consciousness of the subsequent attainment of the noble ones. Thus, the basis for examining existence and non-existence by the Madhyamikas and others, the meaning of "that is not ultimately existent," is that the basis is not existent in the face of the reasoning consciousness that examines the ultimate meaning, that is, it is not established by it. Regarding the writings of this teacher, nothing more clear than that has been said, and it does not seem that there is a clear recognition in the two truths of the teacher Yeshe Nyingpo, and in the Ornament of the Middle Way with its auto-commentary and combined commentary. In the Light of the Middle Way, it says: "All the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating on the true meaning is called ultimate because it has an unerring object. Therefore, it is ultimate. There is a difference made by direct perception and inference, because by the power of their thought, they know that all these things are unborn. Therefore, it is said that there is no birth ultimately, which means that these are not established as being born by true wisdom." Thus, the three wisdoms are named and explained as ultimate because their object is ultimate. And because they are not established as being born by true wisdom, they are explained as unborn by the power of their thought. The two selflessnesses are also supreme because they possess reason, and because they desire to abandon obscurations, they are sought for the purpose of realization, and supreme wisdom is the unerring meaning, that is, the object, so it is explained as the characteristic of the ultimate meaning. Likewise, truth is also established on reasoning consciousness, and by its power, it is without inherent existence, and not by conventional consciousness.
