Therefore, sensory consciousness must also arise dependent on one month's focus, and it will not arise without an external object. If there is no external object, then this would also be a slander against the Sutra Pitaka's statement that "sensory consciousness arises from the condition of an object," because it is unreasonable for it to arise from the condition of an object in either ultimate or conventional truth. Therefore, they also do not accept the all-ground consciousness, because if they accept it, even without an external object, they must posit that a consciousness that appears as things arises from the ripening of its imprints, so there is no point in acknowledging an external object. Therefore, the Essence of Madhyamaka says: "By the name 'consciousness,' I am definitely indicated." If they do not accept this, they will not posit afflicted mind either. Again, in that same text it says: "Other than appearing as an object, what kind of mind itself appears?" Because consciousness appears as the image of an external object, and appears as the nature of experiencing grasping without appearing as that image, therefore consciousness itself appears as the arising of two appearances, self-appearance and appearance as an object, and the self-awareness experienced by the former appearance as an object, and the establishment of these two as the objective condition of object and subject, are also refuted in conventional terms, so they also do not accept self-awareness, because the way of establishing self-awareness is clear here. The way that the teacher Yeshe Nyingpo explains Madhyamaka also seems to be consistent with this way of not refuting establishment by its own characteristics in conventional terms, and the existence of external objects. Thirdly, what reasoning does this teacher mainly use to refute things that exist in ultimate truth? Except for a few refutations with refuting reasons, it is mainly refuted by the determination of contradictories, and considering that the example of the reason and the property to be proven following is easy to understand, for example, "The eye does not see form in ultimate truth because it is a sense faculty, like the ear sense faculty," and "The earth element is not the nature of hardness in ultimate truth because it is an element, like water." They establish with such formulations. This mainly imitates the reasoning of the noble father and sons' treatises, which make many equal arguments with the same reason, because if it is established as the nature of hardness and seeing form in ultimate truth, then in the same case as the elements, there would be a difference between hardness and non-hardness, etc.

It should also be known. Secondly, is there an external world in name? On this, the Lamp of Wisdom says: "If one first takes only consciousness and later wants to completely abandon it, it is better to stay away from it without touching it from the beginning than to wash it after being contaminated by mud. Just as one realizes that external objects have no self-nature, one should also realize that consciousness is without self and without birth." It is said that some Yogacharas explain in the commentary that when they first enter the conventional truth, they deny the external world and admit only consciousness, and later, when they realize the ultimate truth, they should also abandon only consciousness. This is the view they hold. It is better to show that it is not true from the beginning than to first let consciousness be held as true and then deny its truth later. Because just as one realizes that external objects have no truth, one can also realize that consciousness has no truth. It seems that some Madhyamikas are denying the view that it is necessary to guide sentient beings in this order. Similarly, regarding the statement that "the two should not be practiced at the same time, but should be practiced in sequence," it is said as before, "There is no need to be stingy to practice at the same time from the beginning." The commentary also explains that this is the view of some Yogacharas, but I think it is the same as before. Therefore, although this kind of view has appeared, it is good that the Madhyamika tenets of the way that there is no external world in name were established by composing extensive treatises, which was pioneered by Master Shantarakshita, as Master Yeshe De permitted. In addition, the self-commentary of the Ornament of the Middle Way says: "Some people think that by establishing the object of cause and effect, they can answer all the bad opponents, then what is the object of the conventional? Is it only the nature of mind and mental factors, or is there also the nature of external objects? On this, some people rely on the latter view, as the scripture says, 'Treatise Only Consciousness', is to prevent the author and the recipient. It's like saying this. Others think: 'The mind that becomes cause and effect is only consciousness, and whatever is self-established is what abides in consciousness.' Like the Heart of the Middle Way
