Na (Na), fear! Possessing the essence of emptiness and compassion. For some practitioners of Bodhi. (This is what the first verse says,) the teacher teaches the Dharma that is appropriate to the disciples' faculties and wisdom. Then, with three verses, he teaches starting from higher realms. Then, with one verse, for those who hold two truths, he teaches starting from the absence of self in persons, but the existence of the two, grasper and grasped. Then, with one verse, for some of the Mahayana lineage, he teaches the two emptinesses where both grasper and grasped are empty. Then, with three verses, for those Mahayana disciples with superior wisdom, he teaches starting from the absence of inherent existence of phenomena and great compassion, which cause fear in those who have signs. Therefore, as long as no true existence is revealed, all establishments of bondage and liberation, etc., cannot be established. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between what is untrue and what is true. One must first reveal a part of selflessness and then gradually guide them. If there is no basis for establishing cause and effect, then even the relative emptiness cannot be established. Therefore, inherent existence is negated for persons, but almost not negated for the aggregates. The inherent existence of grasper and grasped as separate entities is negated, but the inherent existence of the two emptinesses is not negated. Thus it is taught. When one is able to realize that the meaning of dependent origination itself is the meaning of no inherent existence, then there is no need to make such distinctions. Because it is sufficient to acknowledge that all establishments are reasonable on the basis of negating inherent existence. Even so, for those of the Mahayana lineage who have little danger of holding nihilistic views on karma and its effects, even if some coarse truths are negated, there are still many subtle truths that cannot be negated. And for those who negate from the subtle level, all establishments proven by valid cognition become useless, which is very common. Therefore, the distinction between provisional and definitive meanings made by the sutras, treatises, and commentaries seems to be a skillful method for leading many disciples into the Mahayana. Just as the sutras say that the scriptures are taught according to the faculties of the disciples, so too should one understand those teachers who act in accordance with this. And for those authors of treatises who explain these intentions, one should also understand how they explain those treatises that do not conform to their own tenets, according to the faculties of the disciples and in accordance with their thoughts.

Secondly, it is precisely because of the reason that arises from causes and conditions that phenomena do not have inherent existence established by their own characteristics. Therefore, the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence is said to be the meaning of dependent arising. The teacher sees this as superior to other proclaimers, as the supreme sacred Dharma. Therefore, the teacher praises the Bhagavan in many treatises by means of proclaiming dependent arising. As it is said in the Root Wisdom Treatise: "By what is related and arises, there is no cessation, no birth, no cutting off, no permanence, no coming, no going, no difference, not one meaning, the pacification of proliferation, the stable peace, the best of those who speak of the complete Buddhas, I prostrate to that noble one." And also in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "By what cause birth and destruction, are abandoned by this means, the Victorious One who speaks of dependent arising, I prostrate to the Lord of Sages." And also in the Refutation of Disputes: "By what emptiness and dependent arising, and the Middle Way are of one meaning, the supreme speech is unequaled, I prostrate to the Buddha, the great sage." And also in the Praise of Inconceivability: "Whoever speaks of phenomena as dependently arising, as being without essence, incomparable wisdom, inconceivable, without example, I prostrate to that one." Thus it is said. First, it is said that dependent arising is separated from the eight things such as arising and ceasing. Second, it is separated from them by the reason of being dependent arising. Third, dependent arising, the Middle Way, and emptiness of inherent existence have the same meaning. Fourth, it shows that it is separated from the essence established by its own characteristics such as arising and ceasing by that reason. All the scriptures of the teacher are based on the two truths, conventional and ultimate. If one does not know the difference between the two truths, one cannot understand the true nature of the teachings. Therefore, explaining the scriptures by means of the two truths is also the same reason. All that is shown, which depends on imputation and depends on arising, is the conventional truth. The ultimate truth is merely the emptiness that is not established by its own characteristics because of that reason. As it is said in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness: "Because all things are empty of inherent existence, in all things,"
