The meaning of emptiness is said to be the meaning of dependent arising. The teacher establishes this very principle in the Madhyamaka treatises through reasoning. Therefore, there is not the slightest rational harm in explaining the words of the scriptures that say that birth and so on are without truth. If this were not the case, there would be no way to interpret them as provisional meaning from other perspectives. Therefore, considering that these are very easily established as definitive meaning, the Clear Words states: The teacher composed this Madhyamaka treatise in order to show the distinction between sutras of provisional and definitive meaning. It is said that there are eight kinds of dharmas, from cessation to different meanings, and it is contradictory to say that there are not. In response to this argument, it is said in this way. Furthermore, from that very text, because the intention of what is taught in this way is not understood. Here, what is the teaching that has only that meaning? What here has an intention? Like this, some may doubt, and some, because of their own dullness, understand the teaching of provisional meaning as definitive meaning. In order to eliminate the doubts and wrong views of these two through both reasoning and scripture. The teacher composed this. It is also said in this way. In the Collected Sutras, in response to the question of what is the profound Dharma, the sutras that teach profundity, such as the Hundred Thousand Verses, the Diamond Sutra, and the Eight Thousand Verses of Wisdom, are cited. The Collections of Reasoning also determine that the meaning of these cannot be guided in any other way. Therefore, they consider these to be of definitive meaning, and all that is said differently from these to be intentional. As it says in the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment: Whatever the Thus-gone One has said, 'All these are only mind,' is to dispel the fear of children; that is not suchness. Thus, after preventing external objects, it is said that establishing self-nature for only the mind is not the literal meaning. In the Precious Garland it also says: Just as grammarians teach people to read letters. Similarly, the Buddha teaches the Dharma to those to be tamed, according to what they can tolerate. For some, in order to completely turn away from sins, he teaches the Dharma. For some, in order to accumulate merit. For some, relying on both. For some, not relying on both. Profound and hidden.
