Therefore, it will not purify the obscurations of knowledge. Therefore, the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* states that emptiness, established as the parikalpita-svabhāva (imputed nature), is dharma-nairātmya (selflessness of phenomena), which is the pariniṣpanna-svabhāva (perfected nature), while the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* states that emptiness is the object that purifies the obscurations of knowledge, and these two are contradictory. If, in order to negate forms and other expressions as objects of attachment, one negates the basis of the object of attachment, the svabhāva (own-nature) of the reversal, then one would be negating the establishment of the paratantra-svabhāva (dependent nature). If one negates the establishment of the svabhāva (own-nature) of the self-reversal of the object of attachment, then the Sautrāntika school would also have established that the object of inference, the general characteristic, does not exist as a real entity, so it is unreasonable. Furthermore, the *Sūtra of the Transference of Existence* states: "By what and by whom is the name? What and what are the dharmas spoken of? In that, that is not existent; this is the dharmatā (nature of phenomena) of all dharmas." This quote is also established for the Śrāvakayāna school, so how much more so for the dharmatā (nature of phenomena) of emptiness, the parikalpita (imputed) of the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, which will not appear. This way of emptiness, because it does not have the meaning of mere consciousness that negates the difference in substance between the grāhaka (apprehender) and grāhya (apprehended), how can the statement that dharma-nairātmya (selflessness of phenomena) is the object that purifies the obscurations of knowledge be justified? Therefore, if one asks what reason there is to explain that there are no contradictions in this system, then: It should be explained that this way of emptiness is explained in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* as the object of jñāna (wisdom) that purifies the obscurations of knowledge, and as the unsurpassed Middle Way that abandons both extremes. And the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* states that entering through this door is entering into mere consciousness, so it is not already established by the Śrāvakayāna school. Therefore, the opposite of this, the imputation, the acceptance of the tenets of the school that clings to things as being established by their own nature in name, is also held by the Śrāvakayāna school. In this way, the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* also refutes this with scripture, and one cannot refute other schools with the scriptures of one's own teacher, so one's own school also exists in the object to be refuted. And because it is not a refutation of the difference between those who speak of no svabhāva (own-nature) and the Yogācārins, it is the Śrāvakayāna school. Therefore, without quoting the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, these were refuted by the three established scriptures. Among them, if one first identifies the innate imputation, then the *Compendium* says: For children, regarding the object to be expressed, for five reasons, just as the name is, and just as the expression is.

It should be known that this is clinging to the manifestation of the nature of things. It is said, if asked what is the nature of that thing, then answer that the nature is form. Not answering that the name is form, this is the first reason. Its meaning is, if asked what is the nature of the thing called "form," then one should say that its nature is form, and one cannot say that merely the name called "form" is the nature of the thing called "form." Therefore, when the term "form" is applied, blue is the basis for applying the term of form, observing how it appears, it does not appear to be established by name and convention, but as if established by its own mode of existence. Holding that blue is established as it appears is an imputation of clinging to the name "is form" to blue, and holding that it is established by its own characteristics. It has been said before that this exists in the minds of children, thereby it is established, and since the two schools of Vaibhashika also accept that such a way of holding is reasonable, then how can the self-character expressed by words, which is a conceptual fabrication, be compared to the principle that its basis is self-character? In particular, one should also understand from this the way of imputing on the completely imputed, and the way of imputing on other dharmas. Similarly, when the object and the subject appear as two, holding that the two are different entities as they appear is also an imputation of clinging to the self of phenomena. The answer to the remaining debate will be explained later. The second (part) has two: actual refutation, and dispelling the debate on it. The first is: In order to understand that the reasoning for establishing the emptiness of other-powered and completely imputed natures is not explained in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, therefore three types of reasoning are explained in the Yogacarabhumi Shastra and the Abhidharmasamuccaya. In the Mahayanasamgraha it is also said: How does the nature of the other appear in the nature of the completely imputed, what appears that is not its nature? As an answer to this question, (the sutra) says: Because there is no mind before the name, because of the many and because of the uncertain, its nature is many natures, and it is accomplished by the contradiction of the mixture of natures. Thus it is said. If we explain in an easy-to-understand way the way in which the other-powered is empty of the completely imputed by the contradiction of the nature of the dharma, then the bulging belly is the basis or place of the name of the vase.
