If one knows what the ultimate truth is, then one knows that there are two existences from the ultimate truth. If one asks what these two are. The answer is: names and expressions and designations and conventions are the conventional truth, and the self-characteristics of all phenomena are the ultimate truth. If that is the case, then karma and its maturation have both names and self-characteristics, so how these two are accepted to exist depends on their respective intentions. Thus, the way of existing in the ultimate truth is like the former, and the way of existing in the conventional truth is like the latter, meaning that both exist. Although it is believed that the ultimate truth exists, it is said that all phenomena are without self-nature in the ultimate truth, because it is not understood literally, so this is not contradictory. A person exists in the conventional truth, but is not substantial. Karma and its maturation exist in the conventional truth, and are also substantial, and are the objects of worldly consciousness, so the second way of establishing them does not exist in the ultimate truth, and these two are not the objects of transcendental wisdom, because its object is the inexpressible general characteristic. Some Mahayana practitioners say that all phenomena are without self-characteristics, but exist in the conventional truth. Saying this would fall into the previous accusations, and this is explained very clearly in the commentary on the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes. In the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes, it says: designations and cognitions and expressions are coarse. Thus, the coarse is only the conventional truth, which is divided into three types: the conventional truth of designation, the conventional truth of cognition, and the conventional truth of expression. The latter, combined with the three natures, needs to understand the intention of other sutras that say that the Tathagatagarbha etc. exist in the conventional truth. Thus, if one carefully distinguishes the substantial and imputed of the upper and lower schools, and the reasons for existing in the conventional truth and the ultimate truth, and the differences in these ways of establishing them in the same school, one can well determine the important tenets. The realists admit the imputed existence and existence in the conventional truth, and many Madhyamikas need to establish that these do not exist in the ultimate truth, so that they can understand. Otherwise, they will only be happy to distinguish the differences between the upper and lower schools. The third has two: the way explained in the Ornament of the Sutras, and the way explained in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes. The first is said in the Ornament: Because there is no self and self-characteristic,

Regarding the nature of, because it does not abide and because it holds, it is considered to be without inherent existence because it does not exist. It is said that it is spoken of as being without inherent existence with reference to the three characteristics of conditioned things and the absence of inherent existence as clung to by children. In the Compendium of Topics, it is said that it is spoken of as being without inherent existence from the Extensive One with reference to those two and the three without inherent existence. Because all phenomena depend on conditions, they are without inherent existence because they are without self. The meaning of this is as it is explained in the Madhyamaka-aloka, that there is no birth by one's own nature. Whatever dharma has ceased does not arise again as the nature of that dharma, therefore it is without inherent existence. That which has arisen but has not ceased is momentary, therefore it does not abide in its own nature for a second time, therefore it is without inherent existence. In short, the future sprout does not arise by its own power, and the past sprout does not arise again as the nature of the sprout, and the present sprout does not remain in the second time of its own establishment, therefore it is said that all the dharmas of the three times are without inherent existence. That is what it says. Vasubandhu says that it is without inherent existence because children cling to purity, happiness, permanence, self, or the characteristics of the imputed as other. The other is clinging to the apprehended and the apprehender as different entities. Just as there is no inherent existence, so there is no birth, and because there is no birth, there is no cessation, etc. The former is the cause of the former, and the latter is the accomplishment of the latter, which is said in that very text: Because the latter is the support of the latter, therefore, nature is without existence. No birth, no cessation, primordially peaceful, the nature of nirvana is established. It has already been said. Again, the first and thatness, otherness and self, the nature of self transforms, self, other, and defilement, to the dharma of no birth, it is said to be tolerant. Thus it is said that tolerance is attained in the unborn dharma, which explains how all dharmas are unborn. Therein, the first is that there is no first birth in samsara, and thatness is the former, that is, whatever dharma has arisen before, those arise again as its nature, and the other is the latter, that is, the form that has never existed does not arise, as explained in the commentary. Its meaning is that sentient beings who have never existed in samsara do not arise, and those who have previously ceased and are of the same kind arise, therefore the dharma has never existed.
