That serves as an example. The two, namely, the imputed existent that can be apprehended without depending on other dharmas, and the imputed existent that must be apprehended by depending on other dharmas, and the two that are not established by the power of convention but are established by their own characteristics, are not contradictory in this system. Therefore, although it is said that the habitual tendencies of the ālaya-vijñāna are imputed existents, they are not contradictory to the ultimately existent that was previously explained. They are contradictory to the imputed existent that is imputed by name and conception. According to the second way of establishing it, the Madhyānta-vibhāga states: Meaning, attainment, and accomplishment are considered to be three aspects of ultimate meaning. The commentary on this states: The meaning, the ultimate meaning, is suchness, because it is the meaning of the noble wisdom. Here, the noble is taken to be the wisdom of the uncontaminated equipoise, and since it is its meaning, i.e., its object, it is said to be the noble meaning or the ultimate meaning, which is the meaning of selflessness, i.e., suchness, which is also the ultimate meaning of the pure object. There, it is the only perfectly established nature that is without the two, self-nature and other-nature, so it is said in that way. The Madhyānta-vibhāga states: The completely pure field of activity is twofold; it is said to be only one. And, in its commentary, it states: It is said to be the nature of the perfectly established; the other-nature is not the object of the two kinds of completely pure wisdom. It is clearly stated in this way. The two kinds of wisdom are the wisdom that purifies the two obscurations. Since this system considers that wisdom to be self-cognizance, if one thinks that wisdom also becomes an object, then there is no fault, since it refers to the object that realizes the meaning of that very suchness in relation to which object. Therefore, such an ultimate meaning is not unconditioned, and although such an ultimate meaning is not established, it is not established by the power of convention, but is established as an ultimate meaning that abides by its own characteristics, and this is not contradictory to this school. The Prajñā-hṛdaya-saṃgraha states: That which is liberated from the apprehended and the apprehender is the meaning of the noble consciousness. It is the other shore of the ocean of wisdom, and is known as the treatise of the Yogācāra school. What is said also refers to the former way of being ultimately existent. In many treatises of the Madhyamaka school, when debating with the Yogācāra school, the debate about whether or not other-dependence exists is not done by the power of convention, but is debated about whether or not it is ultimately existent, so those two ultimate existents must be well distinguished. In the treatises of the teacher-brother, the ultimate

There are many dependencies on the subsequent aspects of the formal system. The reason why the two primary natures exist in the conventional is: In the Compendium, it says that the reason why reasons and discriminations exist in the conventional is: Because they can cause all afflictions and are the basis of imputation. The first of these, in the Explanation of Intent, says that when referring to the explanation of a completely pure object as the ultimate truth, it is established as existing in the conventional by the meaning of what is cognized causing all afflictions, which is consistent with the Compendium. The second is: The nature imputed by names and terms, and becoming the basis of the characteristics of imputing terms, is therefore called existing in name. Constant dharma refers to things that have become the place of expressive words. In the Treatise on Distinguishing Relationships, it is also said that considering the objects of the confused consciousness of worldly people and the wisdom of those beyond the world, the two truths, the conventional truth and the ultimate truth, are taught. Expression is conventional, so the truth understood by it is the conventional truth, that is, the object to which expression applies. For example, the step used to cross two feet is called the foot step, and the step used to cross by boat is called the boat step. It is said like this. The Compendium says that the wisdom of the noble ones in meditative equipoise who realize suchness is said to exist in the ultimate truth, which is considering the absence of the two previous constant dharmas established as existing in the conventional. The wisdom attained after that is said to exist in both the conventional and the ultimate. Through focusing on the characteristics of terms, it is said to exist in terms. The characteristic that becomes the basis of imputing terms, and becoming the object of causing all afflictions, therefore existing in the conventional, is not contradictory to existing in the ultimate truth established by its own nature. In the Treatise on Distinguishing Relationships, it is said that the Hinayana school says that in the emptiness of the ultimate truth, karma and its maturation exist, but the agent is invisible. If that is the ultimate truth, then why do all dharmas have no self-nature? If it is in the conventional, then there is an agent there, so he is invisible. Then how should it be stated? As an answer to the debate, the conventional and the ulti-
