Do not cease meditating on the sole suchness. Since there is no opportune time to clearly show here the reasons why doing so is sufficient, the reasons for doing so (not ceasing meditation) on other paths are explained here. Third, if the view of selflessness is not found, no matter what kind of meditation is practiced, that meditation will not abide in the meaning of suchness. Therefore, that view must be found, and even if there is an understanding of the view, when meditating on suchness, if one does not meditate by remembering the view and placing it on top, it will not become a meditation on suchness. Therefore, after having previously conducted one examination of the view, it is also not cultivating suchness to settle without thinking of anything in the mind at the end. Merely becoming accustomed to remembering the view and placing it on top is also merely exhausting the previous way of cultivating calm abiding. Therefore, this is not the meaning of the treatise that explains the way of cultivating insight that is separate from that. Therefore, the meaning of selflessness should be cultivated by individually examining it with wisdom as previously explained. Even if one only does the meditation of examination, the calm abiding that was previously generated will deteriorate. Therefore, one should cultivate by examining with calm abiding as the horse, and one should alternately do settling meditation and examination meditation. That is, if the settling part becomes small because there is too much examination meditation, one should do more settling meditation to restore the settling part. If one does not like to examine because there is too much settling meditation, and even if one examines, one cannot go, and the mind just spins around in the settling part, one should do more examination meditation, so that the two, calm abiding and insight, are cultivated equally, and the power will be great, and one should do it that way. As it says in the last of the Stages of Meditation: 'Also, when insight meditation is practiced, and wisdom becomes very strong, then because calm abiding is weak, like placing a candle in the wind, the mind will be agitated, and therefore one will not be able to see suchness very clearly. Therefore, at that time, one should practice calm abiding. If the part of calm abiding is strong, like a person who is deluded by sleep, one will also not be able to see suchness very clearly. Therefore, at that time, one should also practice wisdom.' Thus it is. When cultivating by examining in this way, it is unreasonable to take any conceptualization as a grasping at characteristics that grasps at truth as true and to prevent it, because the conceptualization of grasping at truth is only one aspect of conceptualization, which has been proven many times before. To see that the harm of reason falls on what is grasped by conceptualization is reason.

If it is thought that this is an excessive accusation and it is proven that this is not the meaning of the scriptures, even if one does not think so about other things, but thinks that all that is grasped by the mind in the nature of reality is the grasping of characteristics of true clinging, then this is also the fault of wrong grasping, not for all that is grasped. Because in order to be liberated from wrong views, it is said that one must investigate the suchness through various means of scripture and reasoning. Here, meditating on suchness is for the sake of generating non-conceptuality, because it does not arise from separate thoughts, because the two, cause and effect, must be in accordance. If one thinks so, then the Blessed One himself has clearly answered this. In the chapter of 'Light Protector', it says: 'Light Protector, just as two trees rubbed by the wind produce fire, and after it arises, it burns the two trees, so too, Light Protector, if there is correct separate thought, the king of noble wisdom will arise, and when it arises, it will burn that very correct separate thought.' It is said that noble wisdom arises from separate thought. In the 'Middle Stages of Meditation', it also says: 'Therefore, when the yogi, having analyzed with wisdom in this way, does not grasp the essence of any object as the ultimate truth, then he enters into the samadhi of non-conceptualization, and also realizes the emptiness of the essence of all dharmas. If someone does not meditate by separately examining the essence of objects with wisdom, but only meditates on completely abandoning mental activity, then his conceptualizations will never cease, and he will never realize the emptiness of essence, because there is no light of wisdom. Therefore, if the fire of wisdom that knows correctly arises from correct separate thought, like the fire produced by friction, it will burn the wood of thought. The Blessed One has said this.' If it is not so, then it would be impossible for the uncontaminated to arise from the contaminated, for the transcendent to arise from the mundane, for the Buddha to arise from sentient beings, for the noble to arise from ordinary beings, because the two, cause and effect, are different. In the 'Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment', it says: 'Where conceptual thought appears, where is emptiness? The object of investigation,
